Peak Pick — Figs

There are lots of things to love about figs.

Gabietou — Cheese of the Pyrenees

Cheese from France, some of the first cheese(s) in my memory. Brie, Crottin, Roquefort, Comte, I remember my first taste of these fantastic products. Gabietou is one of my favorites and it is available now. How did this cheese get to Whole Foods Market? Where did you hear about it? When did you first taste it? I get these questions all the time.

From Dana:

What We're Reading...

We recently challenged some of the best food bloggers out there to a recipe contest. Make a weeknight meal for 4 for less than $4 per serving. Entries came in from chefs of all kinds - cookbook authors, vegans, college students, stay-at-home moms, engineers and we had to narrow a large pool down to our favorite six. But even our runner up recipes were pretty awesome and we thought we'd share with you some of our favorites that didn't make the cut... Apron Adventures: Asian Ginger Steak

New in the Cereal Aisle

Okay, I admit it. I still have a craving for sweet cereals. I fondly remember cocoa puffs, fruit loops and their sugary bliss. It probably tasted so good because it had a ton of sugar in it. Back when I was a kid, people didn’t really pay a lot of attention to sugar content. This was cereal...it had to be good for you…right? Not so fast.

Value at Home — Roast Chicken

When we asked our customers to share their favorite tips for stretching their food budget, quite a few mentioned roasting a whole chicken and turning it into several meals. So in this podcast, we asked natural foods chef and nutritionist Alana Sugar to walk us through the steps of roasting a chicken. She also suggests delicious dishes to prepare with any leftover chicken. What are your favorite dishes using leftover chicken? Here’s a nice roast chicken recipe and some options for leftovers:

Vegan Cane Sugar

If you aren’t on a vegan diet, chances are you didn’t know that all sugar isn’t considered vegan. It doesn’t come from an animal so what’s the issue? Bone char. Bet you didn’t know that many sugars are processed with bone char either. Bone char, usually made from the bones of cows, is used in the decolorization process for sugar – meaning it whitens the sugar through a filtration process. Standard sugar packages won't explain all of this, but the process is unacceptable to many vegans and they avoid sugar as a result.

More on the Teens Turning Green Collection

Hi!  My name is Hannah and I am a member of Teens for Safe Cosmetics: New York. Each September, I look forward to the start of the new school year; but this September, all I can think about is the “Teens Turning Green” collection.  In just a few weeks, this fabulous line of products will be available at Whole Foods Markets nationwide!

What We're Reading...

About three months ago, I purchased my first home - a modest one bedroom, less than a fifteen minute bike ride to work, in a safe but diverse neighborhood and with a gorgeous, gorgeous brand new kitchen.  I remember when I first moved in how my enthusiasm (and lack of funds - man, closing costs add up!) drove me to cook meals for myself from scratch almost every night.  I've since fallen out of this habit - choosing to go out with friends or just 'grabbing something quick' instead of enjoying my own home cooking.

Partnering with the Coalition of Immokalee Workers

I’m very happy to announce that Whole Foods Market has signed an agreement with the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW) designed to help improve wages and working conditions for Florida tomato pickers. I put together this blog entry to explain the steps we took that led us to make this agreement.

Many of you have noticed our new website.  (Those of you getting the Whole Story via RSS, come check it out!)  I say it’s “our” website, but we made it for you.  Some of the things you can do are:
  • find great recipes, which now include ratings and reviews from customers and Team Members

Preparing for Ike in Houston

We're in the midst of preparing for what may potentially be one of the worst storms in Southeast Texas since 1900.  We operate four stores in Houston and one store in Sugar Land which will be closing tonight at 10:00 p.m. and shall remain so until further notice due to Hurricane Ike. Those stores are at:
  • 4004 Bellaire Blvd, Houston, Texas 77025
  • 2955 Kirby Drive, Houston, Texas 77098
  • 15900 Southwest Freeway, Sugar Land, Texas 77478

Budget-Minded Meals

Last week I made a super simple budget-minded meal that I wanted to share with our Whole Deal™ readers. I’ve already added it to my “make-this-meal-when-everyone-is-starving-and-you’re-running-late” list.

Late Summer Means...Hatch Chilies!

The roaster is turning ‘round and ‘round and the Hatch chilies go up and down. Standing in front of the drum roaster, with its dragon's breath bursts of propane and flame, I'm almost mesmerized by the rhythmic movement of the darkening chili pods as they drop damply to the bottom and slowly spin back to the top of the drum.

Fall and the Late Season Grape

By late August, many of the wonderful fruits of summer have either passed their peak or have finished harvesting altogether. Even as I mourn the passing of another cherry season, I always look forward to September and the one summer fruit that gets better and more interesting the further we travel into fall.

Introducing Teens Turning Green Collection

Hi my name is Mattie and I am a member of Teens for Safe Cosmetics: New York.

What We're Reading...

I've been traveling this week - nothing too spectacular- just a flight to upstate NY for a family reunion, followed by a road trip back down to NJ to spend a week with the family and on Sunday - the NYC Century.  During a particularly long layover on my way to NY, as I circled the terminal for the tenth time, I realized just how few options exist in airport dining for anyone seeking healthy, natural or organic - let alone anyone with a dietary restriction.  Same goes for a road trip and its commonly frequented fast food joints and gas stations.  So how do

Music…Artist Discovery Series

Justin Miloro here. As part of my work on our Global Whole Body Team, I have the privilege of overseeing our national music program. You’ve probably seen the CDs we offer in our stores. What you may not have seen is our recently launched Artist Discovery Series. As our national music program grew, we thought it would be fun and exciting to use our stores as launching pads for new artists that are not very well known. We partnered with Inspire Entertainment, who are at the forefront of non-traditional music initiatives, and our Artist Discover Series was born.
