What We're Reading...

This Sunday’s Big Game is likely to offer a little something for nearly everyone – serious football for the sports enthusiast, a star-studded halftime show for the drama queen and outlandishly high-budget commercials for anyone who doesn’t want to be left out of the all-important water-cooler discussions on Monday.   But what Game Day gatherings don’t typically offer, however, are decent food options, especially for those with special dietary needs.

How To Green Up Your Workplace...

...Save Money, Keep Stuff Out Of The Landfill, and Have Fun Doing It My friends are always asking me for tips on how to green up their workplaces - but they need stuff that won't freak out their coworkers (I guess I shouldn't tell them to get rid of all the trash cans just yet). I thought I'd share some ideas that are really simple and have worked for us here in our Austin office.  And, conveniently enough, some of these will even save your company some money.

What We're Reading...

When I wake up on cold mornings in the middle of winter, it's hard to force myself to get out from underneath the warm blankets. Having a hot breakfast helps make the morning bearable. Did you know that skipping breakfast can contribute to weight gain because you end up snacking and eating larger meals later in the day? Without breakfast, you also may not be at the top of your game. A respected European study showed better performance and cognitive ability in people who ate carbohydrates with protein for breakfast.

Gimme 5 Recycling

Great news for recyclers out there! Some of our Whole Foods Market stores are piloting a new program for recycling #5 plastic with Preserve called Gimme 5. If you don’t have the recycling numbers memorized (like me), #5 is commonly used in containers for yogurt, cottage cheese, hummus, medicine bottles, etc.

The Whole Deal™ on Homemade Cleaning Products

The whirlwind of the holidays (and my own post holidays travel schedule) have finally settled and in its wake, I find a messy house in desperate need of a good deep clean.  Pots and pans in my sink, spots on all my mirrors and

Resolution: Reuse

Pick up a newspaper, open a magazine or log on to the internet and everywhere people are talking about ways to “go green in 2009.” Yeah! The more the merrier. A simple way to get all of your friends and family involved in saving our planet is by reusing shopping bags. If you are like me, you visited a relative (who will remain unnamed) over the holidays who doesn’t recycle or reuse anything. Felt like the dark ages!

The Whole Deal™ on The New Year!

Hello 2009! I still can't believe how quickly the holiday season passed and now, as we recover from weeks of decadent eating, it seems like healthy, budget-conscious eating tops most everyone's New Year's Resolutions list.

New and Healthy: Arctic Char

Some people make very specific New Year’s resolutions. Not me. I’m more the type who knows that I want to improve things about my life but I leave it kind of open and general – who knows what could come up! Yet, after indulging in too many wonderful treats over the holidays, I definitely feel a need to focus on getting back to eating sane, healthy foods. So, I was thrilled when I heard about a tasty fish we are featuring in January: Arctic Char.
