Every week Whole Foods Market imports Fair Trade roses from Ecuador, and when a 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit the country earlier this year, our floral buyers wanted to find a way to help the thousands of families displaced by the disaster. This week, individual long stem roses will be available for purchase in our floral departments for $2 each, and 100% of the proceeds will go toward a guaranteed $100,000 donation to Hogar de Cristo, an emergency home contruction program.

In Colombia, families face many obstacles to educational success. Government-funded public schools typically provide only one year of preschool, and many schools operate on a half-day schedule. Working parents with infants and toddlers often struggle to find high-quality child care during those crucial early years.

Whole Foods Market sources some of our Whole Trade® flowers from Elite Flower in Facatativá, Colombia, where an innovative program provides early childhood education, primary school and scholarships for children of farmworkers.

What’s sweeter than a fresh pineapple? A fresh pineapple that helps rural farmworkers access education and opportunity, of course! When you buy a Whole Trade® product, a portion of what you paid goes into a development fund for the community that produced it. The farmers and farmworkers then determine how to use those funds to meet the needs of their community.
