Cherish Cherries

Cherry FestPitters and seed spitters, rejoice! It’s cherry season. These ruby jewels are at their peak of deliciousness, and Whole Foods Market® is celebrating with our 4th annual Cherry Fest. UPDATE: Thank you to everyone that entered! Congratulations to our randomly chosen winners: Robin, Brooke, Megan, Erica and Jill!

We’re giving away five pounds of hand-picked cherries each to five randomly selected winners who share what they would do with that many cherries. Here’s some delicious inspiration:

  1. Bake em’. There is nothing like a pie with peak-of-the-season cherries. Nothing. Well…cherry scones, cake or bread is a close second.
  2. Freeze em’. Smoothies, ice pops, ice cream, oh my!
  3. Preserve em’. Two words: Homemade. Jam.
  4. Dry em’. Then try them in granola and grain salads.

Although no one would blame you if you simply enjoyed heaping bowls of chilled cherries with friends and family. Sometimes simple is best.

Do you cherish cherry season? What would you do with five pounds of plump juicy cherries?

Tell us in the comments below by Wednesday, July 10 and you could win!

The fine print: These are red Washington cherries and will be shipped directly to you from our farmer partners. Depending on availability and quality, they may be organic or conventional. No purchase necessary. Promotion ends July 10, 2013, 11:59 PM CDT. Must be a legal resident of the US or Canada (except in Quebec, where it is void) age 18 or older to participate. Taxes on prize, if applicable, are the responsibility of the winner. Employees of Whole Foods Market, Inc., are not eligible. Void where prohibited.

make preserves, chutney and a cherry compote (at least the ones we did not just eat!)

I can just picture fresh pitted cherries drizzled with an infused rose scented geranium simple syrup over home made ice cream. I have the rose scented geraniums. All I need are some dark ripe cherries. Yum

I would use them in all sorts of ways - pies, ice cream topping, and a cherry salsa come to mind first, but the one recipe I've been waiting to make with cherries is cherries soaked in brandy - - for a nice garnish in a summer cocktail.

Kelly Hines says …

Our problem is making something with them before we eat them all!

Janice Rogers says …

The best way I can think of to enjoy 5 pounds of delicious cherries is to refrigerate them until chilled and sit down with a large bowl and eat one at a time...slowly....enjoying every bite. I so look forward to this time of year when the cherries are in season. Jan Rogers

My husband and I just bought a new place, and we're going to throw a housewarming party next month. I can't imagine a party without fresh summer fruits, namely, cherries! I know I'd want cherries at the next party I go to, so I'd love to have five pounds to share among friends!

I would try very hard to get my wife to eat a few. I know she would love them, but she was traumatized by her older sisters throwing cherries from their cherry tree at her. At 52, she has still not eaten a cherry since.

My favorite way to eat them is to freeze them first, then let them melt in my mouth. What a sweet, cooling snack for this hot weather! I also like to dry them for later use. And my-oh-my, cherry pie is the best, with a sugar-sprinkled lattice pie crust.
