Get to Know DIY Plant Milks

Whether you’re abiding by a strict dairy-free diet or you just like to experiment with different milks in your smoothies and cereals, you can make vegan plant milk from grains, seeds, nuts and even fruits at home. Here’s how.

Many of us grew up drinking cow’s milk, and it wasn’t that long ago that it seemed like there were no other options for creamy milk-like drinks. The rise of soymilk gave way to a bevy of other nondairy milks, from coconut to rice to almond.

Often plant-based milks are created from nuts, but there are actually quite a few other options available that are simple to make at home. Even if you don’t need to avoid dairy, these delicious milks are worth a try!

What are they?

Plant-based milks are typically made by soaking grains, nuts, seeds and even fruit, then blending until smooth with fresh water and straining out the “pulp.” What’s left behind can sometimes be reused to make your own crackers, dog biscuits or other baked goods!

How to Make and Use DIY Plant Milks

Varieties of plant milks abound, flavored or unflavored, sweetened or unsweetened. Making your own is quite easy. All you need is a good blender and cheesecloth to strain the liquid. You can also purchase a special “nut bag” that is the ideal thickness for straining plant milks, if you like.

Plant milks can often be swapped in for dairy milk in recipes. For savory recipes, make sure to use unsweetened plant milk. Sweetened milks are best for drinking straight or adding to flavor smoothies or other beverages.
