By Jennifer Cheng, August 29, 2012  |  Meet the Blogger  |  More Posts by Jennifer Cheng

UPDATE: Thanks for all of your questions regarding the percentage of fat for the ground grass-fed beef that will be included in this sale. Each region and store will have varying percentages on sale so you will need to reach out to the store where you plan on shopping that day. You can find their contact information at http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/stores/list.

Here’s the beef! Mark your calendar for Friday, September 7. Why? Because on that Friday only all of our US stores will have ground grass-fed beef on sale for $4.99 per pound. If you haven’t tried grass-fed beef before, this is the perfect time to see what everyone’s talking about. The rest of you “seasoned” grass-fed beef lovers can take advantage of this opportunity and stock up! This sale is one day only so you’ve got to stop by our stores on Friday, September 7th to pick some up.

Sale valid in our US stores only, while supplies last. Availability and limits may vary by region, so you can contact your store for details. Most of our stores do not provide rain checks for sales like this.

Here’s what to know about grass-fed beef:

  • Grass-fed beef ranching is not only good for the animals, but involves managing natural resources and supporting local producers.
  • Grass-fed beef is a leaner choice and has a more favorable ratio of omega fatty acids.
  • Grass-fed beef is priced fairly for the producer and is worth every penny.
  • Grass-fed beef is a delicious alternative to grain-fed beef and cooks a little differently.

Whether you’re buying the pasture-raised, naturally flavorful ground grass-fed beef during this sale or you’re buying other cuts of beef from our butchers, you’re getting beef that’s 5-Step™ Animal Welfare rated. That means that our farmer partners are dedicated to improving the lives of farm animals and it also means that you know how the animals were raised for the meat that you’re buying.

If this is your first time cooking grass-fed beef, here are some awesome cooking tips from Liz Pearson, one of our recipe developers and food stylists.

Here are some recipes so you can get set for next Friday’s (that’s 9/7) sale on ground grass-fed beef. Green Chile Cheddar Grass-Fed Beef Burgers, anyone?

Remember, this sale on ground grass-fed beef is one day only, so make sure to mark your calendar and stop by one of our US stores on Friday, September 7th to get some!

@NATASHA - Yes, all of our grass-fed beef is grass finished in that grass must be their only forage for their entire life and they cannot be given grain or grain byproducts.

@LIZ - I checked the page labeled "Beef" at http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/department/article/beef and didn't find anything about legumes. Send me the link to the page you're referring to and I can look in to it for you!

Is this beef 100% grass fed and not grain finished?

@JAKE - Yes, all of our grass-fed beef is grass finished. We follow the USDA requirements in that grass and forage shall be the feed source consumed for the lifetime of the animal and they cannot be fed grain or grain byproducts while having continuous access to pasture during the growing season.

How about Whole Foods offering BISON, which is a leaner meat and has more protein than beef! Occasionally, I buy the packaged Bison, but have never seen it offered from the butcher section. I currently shop in NYC stores. Generally, Union Square or 25th & 7th Avenue. My comment is not based on my personal need, but rather a consideration for other 'meat eaters' who might appreciate availability of Bison products. .

My local WF butcher says this ground grass fed beef is from "trim." Isn't trim the left-overs from other cuts of beef?

@JEANNE - I'm sorry to hear about your experience. Our one-day sales only occur while supplies last as our stores only receive a limited amount of product. If you were to give your local store a call before you head out for the sale next time, they'd be more than happy to let you know what they have in stock!

@BEVERLY - So sorry to hear about your grandson. We currently do not have a similar sale slated for the near future. I would encourage you to reach out to your local store to see if they have plans for similar sales particular to their store. You can find their contact information at http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/stores/list.

@CAROLINE - I checked with the Meat Coordinator to clarify this for you. Using the term "trrim" simply means that when butchers are cutting steaks and roasts for their case, the trim are pieces that might not equal the size of the other items in the case and are therefore then ground for ground burgers. This process does not alter the quality of the meat in any way. Essentially you are getting great steak or roast cuts in burger form!
