October is the quintessential all-American month. It’s a time for tailgates, football games, apple picking, baseball playoffs and…cheese!

That’s because October is American Cheese Month, a time to celebrate the country’s best cheeses.

To get in the spirit we asked a few of our cheesemongers (many of whom are Certified Cheese Professionals™! opens in a new tab)  for their picks Here’s what they’re eating this month:

  • Alpha Tolman aged at the Cellars at Jasper Hill — Greensboro, Vermont: A raw cow’s milk cheese that when mature, is bold and savory with butter and caramelized onion flavors.

  • Rawstruck by Coach Farms — Pine Plains, New York: A raw, goat’s milk cheese that is hand-crafted in small batches once a month. It has a complex flavor, with nuances of mushrooms and faint citrus notes.

  • Rum Runner BellaVitano by Sartori — Plymouth, Wisconsin: A rich, creamy cow’s milk cheese whose buttery flavors, and slightly sweet aromatics come alive when soaked in a Wisconsin-produced “Heath rum.” It’s only available at Whole Foods Market stores!

  • Flora Nelle by Rogue Creamery — Central Point, Oregon: This is a bold and earthy cow’s milk blue cheese that is crumbly to cut and creamy on the palate, with a long finish.

  • Five Peppercorn Raclette by EMMI Roth USA — Monroe, Wisconsin: This cow’s milk cheese has a distinct aroma, a velvety texture and a mild nutty flavor that has pleasantly sharp tastes from distinct peppercorns. A Whole Foods Market exclusive!

  • Grand Cru Reserve Wheel by EMMI Roth USA — Monroe Wisconsin: Wheels of Grand Cru are hand-selected for six to nine months of additional curing, developing nutty undertones and hints of fruitiness in this award-winning cow’s milk cheese.

  • Humboldt Fog by Cypress Grove — Arcata, California: This renowned goat’s milk cheese has a subtle, tangy flavor with a fresh cream taste, floral notes, herbal overtones and a citrus finish along with a distinctive layer of edible ash.

  • Asiago with Rosemary by Saxon Creamery — Cleveland, Wisconsin: This cow’s milk cheese has a delicate texture and a mild flavor studded with notes of rosemary. It makes a fantastic addition to a cheese plate and is also great for melting in recipes. It’s only available at Whole Foods Market!

American Cheese Month is a great reason to head over to the cheese department and give one of these delicious cheeses a try (our cheesemongers are happy to let you have a taste before you buy). Better yet, get your friends together and celebrate the month with an American cheese tasting party.
