I can't commend your action on labeling GMO's enough. Well done. This actually is a corporation that behaves as though a human being runs it. Please remember, customer loyalty DOES matter, and you gain more of mine every year. By the way, I am a wellness specialist, so I tell a lot of people where to shop. You are # 1 on my list. .

Why wait until 2018 to tell us what is in our food? We could all be dead from GMOs by then! And isn't the goal to keep us as customers of Whole Foods for longer than that?

Thank you so much, this is long over due, we are very grateful. We hope you can begin implementation much sooner than five years. And please do make public updates as you progress, this will encourage other retailers to follow your example. We are inspired by your step and will shop more at WF!

We just read that GMO labeling will be done by 2018. Why the wait? As a stockholder and a customer in the store, its important for all of us to have this information now.

@D.LAUREN & @LAUREN - This is a complicated issue. We wanted to give our supplier partners enough time to make this change. Fortunately, many of our suppliers are already well on their way to moving to Non-GMO ingredients and a good number are already there. While 5 years is the deadline, we know there will be progress much sooner. We plan to announce key milestones along the way.

Very happy to hear this... please keep us informed on the progress of this initiative and let 'us' know how we can help with this by getting the message out or other supporting activities. We are happy with your decision to support customer choice in GMO labeling and, in doing so, we will support you by continuing to shop Whole Foods and recommending Whole Foods to family and friends.

My husband and I are SO glad Whole Foods is taking this giant step to fight GMO foods and Monsanto! One of our local chains is labeling all the food in its stores also. Putting Roundup in our food chain and soils, as Monsanto is doing, is ruinous to everyone's health. It's time for farmers to have a choice regarding the type of seeds they plant, and to be able to farm organically without having Roundup-contaminated seed blowing into their fields. The next step is to get the US govt. to outlaw pesticide- and herbicide-contaminated seed.

I am interested in learning more about the GMO issue. Can you please tell me what specific issues have arisen with GMO's and what particular dangers you are seeking to protect the public from? Many thanks,

Commitment to GMO transparency is a bold leadership move by Whole Foods. The impact of this announcement on consumers has been to sharply raise awareness of the prevalence of GMO ingredients in food they currently buy and will certainly change their purchasing decisions. This enhanced consumer awareness will likely accelerate the rate of change on GMO labeling, enabling a shorter time frame for WF to accomplish this goal. In my own case, the WF announcement motivated me to research ingredients in gluten-free and other products I purchase at WF. I emailed several producers who were generally forthright about revealing which of their products are GMO-free and/or in the process of being non-GMO certified. I found that In several instances, WF stocks foods that are labeled "All Natural" but in fact have multiple GMO ingredients, while the same producers also sell an "organic" line of the same foods that are GMO-free. In other cases, I found non-GMO foods stocked by a local supermarket down the street from WF that WF has yet to carry, I shared my suggestions for product substitutions and additions with staff at my local WF store who seemed appreciative.. My suggestion? Build more customer engagement by deliberately inviting customers to research the GMO/non-GMO status of products they purchase and forward the results to both WF corporate and individual stores. These inquiries to vendors to WF will certainly be noticed and will further accelerate the change to GMO labeling...

Thank you, Nikki, for your response. I was more looking for documented cases of health or dietary issues with GMO 's because everyone seems to be so worried for some reason. The website you directed me to seems awfully politically charged but I reviewed it in detail. I also cross checked their information with academicsreview.org which left me even more puzzled. Anyway, I shall continue my quest to find out if this a real issue or not. Thanks again.

I love this and am thrilled that WF has made this move and put the wheels in motion. My question is what is your philosophy on honey? I produce a product that uses honey. I refuse to use "organic" honey as it is not sourced or produced in the US and in fact there is no such thing as US organic honey. I would rather buy local and know that I am getting top quality, never added to or cut honey. However, today, in order to be certified by the Non GMO Project, you must use "organic" honey. In my opinion this is just not right. As a loyal shopper and supplier to WF, I would hope that over the next 5 years, you will look at this issue and perhaps even influence the USDA. Many thanks!

Step by step, inch by inch, we can help to get back the way farming use to be done. Never think you cannot make a difference or that it's too late...well done, Whole Foods Markets for giving me the option to choose and allowing me as a consumer to make a difference.

Thank you Whole Foods! Thrilled to hear that this is an initiative as the public deserves to know what's in the foods we eat. At the same time, disappointed that we can't get the government to pass laws labeling GMO foods. Also love all of the information you have provided on GMOs. We're spreading the word and trying to educate folks on what they are. www.fitgirlredefined.blogspot.com
