4″ Potted Phalaenopsis Orchids on Sale This Friday

When I was about nine years old, a family acquaintance made my day. He was a very distinguished older gentleman, a banker I believe, and came bearing roses for my great-aunt. He plucked one from the bouquet, turned and handed it to me and said, “a beauty for a beauty.”

It was probably the first time I’d ever received a flower and to this day that memory makes me smile. It’s plain and simple, people like flowers. Their purpose in our lives is pretty obvious: to bring in some beauty and make us smile.

Whole Foods Market® has a one-day sale that will hopefully do just that. Stop by our US and Canadian stores this Friday, April 27, because Phalaenopsis orchids in four-inch pots are on sale for $9.99. Sale valid in our US and Canadian stores, while supplies last. Availability and limits may vary by region, so you can contact your store for details. Most of our stores do not provide rain checks for sales like this. Phalaenopsis (pronounced fayl-eh-NOP-sis) is a scentless multi-bloom variety that comes in a dizzying range of colors.

It’s low-maintenance so it’s perfect for budding orchid aficionados. These plants grow well near bright windows with no direct sun light.

You’ll find more care tips on the American Orchid Society’s website.

Orchids are pretty special plants and not just because of their stunning blooms. Did you know that the orchid family of plants is extremely old, with fossilized evidence dating back more than 15 million years?

They grow in a remarkable range of climate zones: from the equatorial tropics to near the north and south poles. The plant has a practical side as well – vanilla, a common commercial flavoring, owes its origins to the orchid family of plants. Stop by on Friday and pick up a Phalaenopsis orchid for yourself and another for someone else. I assure it will bring a smile to whoever gets to enjoy its beauty.

Are you an orchid lover? What’s your favorite variety?

I am currently caring for 2, they are tricky and I am learning as I go - I do not have a green thumb -so I am seeking advice from websites-thanks for the link above. Over 2 months ago I re-potted mine and they have bounced back and show improvement. I get anxious when I see new growth! Maybe I can find a different color/type on Friday-thanks for the sale!

The best way to water orchids l is to place 3 ice cubes on the pot, once a week. Be careful to not place them on the leaves. I have had success with this method.

These are the easiest of all orchids to have. Water only when completely dry--about every 10days Fill a clean kitchen sink or bucket with tepid water and gently submerge the entire pot for 1-2mins remove and allow to drain thoroughly. Only feed your orchids when they are NOT in flower or you will only speed up the flowers dying off. Feeding a weak solution when watering over several wks is better than 1 full strength. It is not ness. to cut the stem of the old flower stalk off--no one cuts them in the wild u know. When it shrivels and dries u will be able to wiggle it free. When a new flower stalk emerges begin to stake it when it reaches about 6",loosely guide it up the stake, too tight will cut off the circulation. Keep orchids out of direct sun--they grow in trees UNDER a heavy leafy canopy--so light is good but direct sun will burn them. Also do not use leaf polish products on them, just buff with a water dampend cloth. Do not cut the roots, it is ok if they trail over the sides and dangle down. Resist touching the blossoms as the oils in your hands will cause the flower to brown and die. This variety of orchid does not need high humidity or misting ,too wet and they rot. Less is more with these orchids, ignore them and they do great to much "love" is a killer.I have had some of mine for about 15yrs now, I pay them little attention and they grow and bloom beautifully!

When watering all my plant, I let the water stand for several hours. Let the chlorine dissipate. Not sure if is necessary, my plants lov there water not directly out of the tap. So they say.

Very pretty, all these illustrious flowers. Hopefully I'll be able to advance my gardening knowledge beyond that of moss and ground covers, and will refrain from planting a bulb upside down like my father did some time back. It still grew -- it just took a little longer than usual.

I have 6 orchids, only 1 blooming now. I have had my oldest one for 17 years. I water around 11:00 am about every 10 days or so in the sink with tepid water and let them dry before replacing in the window. Old saying is they don't like their feet wet! Roots! I do give orchid food only when they have finished blooming. They have been a true love and my husband and sons call them my daughters since I have no girls and they are so beautiful when they bloom!
