By Jennifer Cheng, July 26, 2011  |  Meet the Blogger  |  More Posts by Jennifer Cheng
We’ve got your fresh, wild Alaska salmon here! This Friday only, our troll-caught Coho salmon will be on sale for $8.99 a pound. Our buyers in Alaska work directly with fishermen and processors to bring you wild salmon as soon as they start running. It’s never frozen which means you get that incomparable fresh summer salmon flavor. This sale is for one day only so make sure that you stop in this Friday, July 29th to hook this sweet catch!
$x.xx = amount of savings will vary
What does “troll-caught” mean, you ask? (No, it doesn’t mean caught by a troll! Read on!) Trollers are small boats that fish by hook and line. Fishing this way means that there is little impact on the environment and minimal bycatch, or non-targeted catch. Troll-caught salmon are caught one at a time, cleaned by hand and packed in ice. This careful individual handling process results in top quality and superb flavor. Due to the small size of the boats and the unpredictability of weather conditions, our troll-caught Coho has a limited availability, so a sale on troll-caught Coho salmon (from fisheries certified sustainable by the Marine Stewardship Council, no less) really is a special occasion. Chefs and home cooks alike love Alaska Coho salmon for its mild flavor, delicate flake and moist and tender texture. Here are some of summer’s best ways for you to enjoy the fabulous flavor of troll-caught Coho salmon. We think you’ll fall for this fish—hook, line and sinker! Remember, our Alaska troll-caught wild Coho salmon is only available for a few short weeks, so make sure to stop by our one day sale this Friday, July 29th to get summer’s best deal!

Thank you for being a store committed to making food safe both environmentally and organically/naturally. ..but really, right between Brighton and Howell would be a great place for a store

If you can't eat it on friday, what is the best way to store it? Can you freeze it once you buy it? Will it stay in the fridge until saturday night? Thanks!

@Karen, If you’re planning to cook your fish tomorrow, we recommend storing it in ice in the back of your refrigerator where it is coolest. The fish should be fine to cook and eat the next day.

Just bought this today, and cooked for dinner, using a technique recommended by America's Test Kitchen. Oven and baking sheet preheated to 500 F. Olive oil on Salmon, then just Kosher Salt & pepper. Put in oven on preheated sheet, reduce heat to 325, and cook to 125 degrees internal temp. Excellent! There is a difference between really FRESH, and "previously frozen," etc. Great buy at this price.

I learned today that I could have called ahead in the morning and had some held aside for me (I thought that was only for Turkeys at Thanksgiving time). Of course, I gave no thought to Whole Foods not having enough salmon. The advertising was very effective. Perhaps they shouldn't have advertised and just let regular shoppers buy it. Word would have gotten around and the salmon would have sold out anyway but the advertising costs would have been saved which could have gone to buy more Coho. Or Whole Foods could have kept the price at its normal price of around $13 per pound and not run out. It is worse for a store to run out than it is to make their normal profit.

The Whole Foods in the Gateway Shopping center in Austin , Texas is an awesome neighborhood feeling kind of store. The guys in the seafood department are very friendly and knowledgeable. Especially Scott, he is always helpful and a joy to talk to, give that guy some more $$$$$ he is definitely a keeper, just like the tasty Coho Salmon he sold me today at the one day sale!

@Cathy: Our salmon is extremely fresh, however it’s not labeled as ‘Sushi Grade’ under the FDA requirements. That said, our stores often do carry sushi grade varieties. Please check in with the Seafood counter at your local store. Thanks!
