Healthy Changes for Healthy Weight

By Chris Jensen, January 11, 2011  |  Meet the Blogger  |  More Posts by Chris Jensen
Need help developing healthier habits? Good health—and healthy weight—are about smart decision-making. Listen in and learn about success tools for creating health through optimal nutrition in this encore presentation of our podcast interview with Dr. Joel Fuhrman, board-certified family physician, author, and co-founder and chief medical officer of Eat Right America. Let us know what steps you are taking toward healthy changes this year for a chance to win an Eat Right America bundle featuring some of their best-selling books, DVDs and assorted other special gifts: a $97 value! Simply enter a comment below by January 31st and one lucky reader will be selected at random.

The motivating reasons Dr. Fuhrman’s patients make healthy weight a priority: •Learning about the successes of others losing weight and reversing chronic disease, when all other diet methods have previously failed, triggers the desire to recommit to health. •Discovering the science, logic and theory behind high-nutrient eating to remove addictive overeating provides the drive to get started. The two biggest obstacles that stand in the way of motivation and determination to lose weight or maintain a healthy weight: •Misinformation about food and nutrition indoctrinated at an early age. •Allowing feelings and emotions to govern decision-making and food addictions to control behavior. The top habits to adopt when trying to maintain a healthy weight: •Focus on long-term health and not on immediate weight loss. •Eat enough food volume with high-nutrient foods to remove the desire to overeat. •Educate with the right information from the start. Everyone can take steps toward being healthier with this knowledge: •Our health is our greatest wealth. •We can’t escape the biological laws of cause and effect. We must recognize that we can’t buy good health; we have to earn it with healthy eating and physical fitness. •Good nutrition is not optional; it’s essential. Putting nutritional science into action allows us to take control of our health destiny.

I am a married stay at home and homeschooling mom of three. A lot of my day is spent sitting with the kids while they do their schoolwork. I realized that I really needed to do something to get myself in motion and active and change the food I feed not only myself but my family. I have volunteered to coach one of our local "Little Dribblers" teams and that has been wonderful exercise for our whole family. I am also trying to make a local Zumba class a part of my weekly schedule. I struggle when it comes to good, healthy meals for my family that also fit our budget. This us something I am really trying to learn more about and I would appreciate your help! Blessings, Christy

I have always eaten A LOT of processed grains and man-made carbohydrates. I have gone gluten-free, and I am focusing on incorporating a greater amount of nonstarchy vegetables for healthy carbohydrates. I am dedicated to eating "square" meals with protein, real carbs, nonstarchy veggies and healthy fats. In the long run, I hope to reach a healthier weight for my body, but for now I just want to improve my eating habits so I can feel better and be healthier! Every time I shop at Whole Foods, I feel re-invigorated and excited about working towards healthy nutrition!

I am the heaviest I have ever been in my life. It is taking a toll on my health and my enjoyment of life. I am working to make changes--trying to eat low fat vegetarian. My goal is to feel better, get off of my medications, and lose weight. I want to be more active.

30 years of emotional weight gain and 7 children later, I am making strides in eating right and getting healthy. Getting control of what goes in my mouth has been my priority after the last child went off to college. It is all about me and living well for the next 30 years! Thanks Whole Foods Market for encouraging and educating me in this journey! Your employees and educational material available in the store have helped me immensely!

No question that eating fresh and healthy at your stores is the basic and necessary start to any thoughts of good health and diet. Personally i have the staff at all your stores are well informed and most helpful. It surely is better to have a regular healthy diet than the ups and downs of pill taking and far more tasty! I am happy you are available for me. jane

I have oatmeal for breakfast, sugarless jello for lunch and for dinner I have any kind of lean meat and a salad. If I need to get a sugar high or need a snack, it is fruit. I have lost a total of 20 pounds and stay the weight I use to be.

I'm 42 years old and approximately 60 lbs. overweight. I have transitioned my family to buying mostly organic and to start living by the whole foods motto. My goal is to lose the 60 lbs. by the summer of 2012 and to train and run in the Bank of America Chicago Marathon in October of 2012. I currently have started taking judo classes once a week, and walking everyday, eating whole, raw foods. Once I have lost the first 30 lbs. I will start to run to train for the marathon next year. I greatly appreciate having a store like Whole Foods that can make available everything I need to turn the health of my body around so that I can be here for my family as a husband and a father for many years to come. Thanks Whole Foods!

This year I am sticking to my no soda and no meat goal. I gave up meat 11/11 and I gave up sodas 05/11. It has not been easy and I have had a few slip ups but this year I am sticking to my plan and am finding great ideas for alternatives to both! Thanks Whole Foods!

I love the line that we have to "remove the desire to overeat", not to cheat, not eat, eat less but to not overeat, which some people don't see/admit, is a Habit, one of the top bad Habits.
