Help Us Celebrate $4 Million and Counting!

THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR COMMENTS. CONGRATULATIONS TO TARA FROM ANN ANBOR, MICHIGAN! SHE'S THE WINNER OF THE LOCAL PRODUCT GIFT BASKET! Good news – as of this week, Whole Foods Market has funded $4 million in low-interest loans for small, local producers through our Local Producer Loan Program! Even better news – that money has helped our neighborhood farmers, bakers, artisans, mom-and-pop shops (you name it) grow their businesses and bring hundreds of high quality products into our stores for our customers to enjoy. The best news – to celebrate the milestone, we're giving away a basket full of goodies made by some of our loan recipients!  It's simple. Just enter a comment below by March 22nd telling us why you love your local producers and you have a chance to win! We’ll choose one lucky comment at random to receive the basket. Why did we start the Local Producer Loan Program? Whole Foods Market recognizes that small businesses (even with high quality products and a viable business plan) sometimes need a hand to reach their big dreams. So in 2007, we launched the Local Producer Loan Program with a commitment to fund up to $10 million dollars in low-interest loans. After all, it's our hard-working local producers and their unique offerings that give each of our stores its one-of-a-kind flavor and pizzazz. Check out what's in this bountiful basket. And remember, since these products are made by local stars from all across the country, you may not be able to find them at your local store. All the more reason to post your comment by March 22nd for a chance to give these great local favorites a try.

I love our local producers because their products are natural (without chemicals etc.) and therefore healthier - besides supporting the local producers (businesses) also helps the state and our economy. It is therefore a VERY good thing to support local producers.

I love that by shopping locally I get to cut out the middle man and meet the farmers and producers directly. It's so important to know what your food is and where it's coming from, and by eating locally you can be sure of what you're getting!

I love my local producers because I can view where my product is actually coming from and talk with the producers face to face and feel as much pride in buying from them as they feel about making the prodcut! :)

I love keeping my "money at home." I'd much rather support someone trying to make a go of it themselves than some large corporate organization profiting off potentially unfair labor practices.

I love finding new sources of produce and gluten-free products that are grown or made by small area operations - it makes me feel I am helping a neighbor while getting food that is truly fresh. I work for a local supplier and Whole Foods is one of our accounts. I get to see everyday the impact of seeing those orders come in and how it keeps our 55-employee company humming...I think buying local is the best way to give back! Thanks for championing this concept - other grocers are watching and imitating you which is a compliment and also a good thing! Keep up the great work!

Added to all the other good reasons for supporting local providers is the growing cost of transportation. With fuel prices skyrocketing, local producers can help keep prices down

I love my local producers because they produce a quality I can trust. I love getting veggies and fresh chicken from my local farmer’s market. It’s always top-notch quality at reasonable prices. And the veggies are just beautiful. No, every apple doesn’t look just like the one next to it, but that’s how you know it’s real food and good food. Thank you!!!!

Supporting local producers is smart both financially and health-wise. It makes sense economically because you're supporting local businesses and ultimately supporting where you live and play. And often it means you're getting fresher food that's more nutrient dense. It makes sense from all angles!

Offering those in the community who not only give back, but provide us produce and products that we KNOW where they are coming from, gives us a chance to repay them! There are so many wonderful local artisans and farmers in out Indianapolis area and the greatest way to get to know these folks is to purchase their products!

Buying local often gives you the opportunity to get to know the person or people involved in producing what you are purchasing. Having a connection to the grower/brewer/vintner/craftsman of what you are purchasing gives you a greater appreciation for the product and what it took to get it into your hands.

Samantha Cutler says …

I support local producers. They make unique products that are generally healthier and tastier than the "big brands." I know that by supporting local producers I am making a diference in lives of the people around me.
