I celebrated three-quarters of a century of life in January 2011. This is the 5th year of my membership in a local CSA where I get fresh local vegetables each week all year.I'm discovering vegetables I'd never heard of or eaten before and learning how to prepare them. I enjoy the connection with the people who grow what I eat and learning more about the products and the process. That change has prompted me to look for local food and other products whenever possible. Last month I bought Mark Bittman's wonderful cookbook: How to Cook Everything, a wonderful complement to this new adventure!

Besides the freshness of local products, I also like the fact we are also helping the enviorment by not using the fuel it takes to "import" products to my city.

Local is the BEST! I think the combination of our North Carolina soil and water helps our farmers grow the best tasting, most beautiful produce ever. I have never bought a better tomato in the grocery store than what I get at the local farmer's markets.

I love my local producers because I get to run into them, meet, try their wonderful products, and remember the pleasant and personable encounter when ever I use their special products. Plus, the products are usually introduced into our neighborhoods by a small operation that is their heart and pride. What's not to love!

Freshness and local is something that can not be mistaken or ignored. It is great to be able to go to a market that encourages that idea and builds community. Also the food is great and it provides me a great way to get my children to eat health. Thanks!

Buying locally grown produce is a win win situation. The local farmer has a place to sell his crop and the buyer gets super fresh produce with all the vitamins intact.

I love to buy from local producers and local markets because the food has not had to be picked way before it is ripe in order to ship it great distances. The nutritional value is helped, my family's health is helped and our local economy is helped. In addition, I had a question regarding a problem my daughter was having with the peach trees she planted. One of our local producers actually visited with me by email and helped to work out the problem. Later in the season, that producer's peaches were in the bins at my local Whole Foods. It is so sad to me to see any merchant have to close his doors in this economy because we do not support local stores but order online instead.

Local producers mean food is fresher, and less resources are needed to get the food to the market.

I love to talk with the farmers. I've grown my own vegetable garden for years, so appreciate what they do even more. And they are way more successful than I am, so I am inspired.

Buying local supports the farms and producers, and this way I always know exactly where my food is coming from and that it is fresh and natural. Win-win for both sides :)

I like to buy local to support the small businesses in our area. The more incentive we can give people to pursue their dreams, the better America will be.

I believe the economy has come to the point where supporting local business is not only the right thing to do but is necessary for our state to survive. What better way to insure that that the products we use are not only of great quality and fresh and at the same time cut back on the use of fuel used in transporting imported goods.
