Many people want to start off each year with dietary changes as part of a weight loss program. It's a good chance for a fresh start, so I like to help them make the right food choices and ensure that exercise is part of the overall regime. Something else that I've been recommended for the past five years, which has become the most important part of this program, is cleansing. DrIt's one of the major - and often missing - components of a successful weight loss plan. I consider it one of the three keys to kick-starting a diet.
  1. Optimizing digestion: get a good cleanse supplement to help you get things "moving."
  2. Managing your food intake: don't just eat fewer calories, eat better calories - more fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and lean meats (try to eat organic foods when possible.)
  3. Becoming more active: Get out there and start moving. Make your exercise something you enjoy, and it'll become part of your routine.
How does a cleanse optimize digestion? A cleanse propels your body's digestion system to help clear out the "junk" you may have accumulated over the holidays. With the right cleanse supplement, two weeks is about what it should take to get your body the momentum it needs to help you reach your fitness potential. Not all cleanse supplements are alike. Look for a good cleanse supplement - they're not all the same. A good cleanse supplement program can give you the two-week "recharging" your health batteries need. The supplement should include:
  • Fiber to help pull out the bad and get things moving. You want to go with a fiber supplement that expands - but does so gently - in your intestines to scrub toxins and excess waste away from intestinal walls and helps prime your body for fitness. It doesn't give the bad stuff any place to hide or a chance to "double back" and be re-absorbed. Oddly, many cleanse supplements don't include fiber, so choose carefully.
  • A natural, gentle laxative formula.Look for a laxative formula that listens to the needs of your body. Make sure it's a gentle, predictable laxative with no harsh stimulant ingredients to make you feel off balance - just botanicals that help get things "moving."
  • Support for your liver, too.The liver is always busy. It helps the body keep the good and get rid of the bad. Using an herbal supplement that includes milk thistle can do an amazing job of supporting the liver's ability to detoxify the body. One thing to look for when choosing a milk thistle product is that it is absorbable (look for products bound to phosphotidylcholine).
Used in conjunction with a healthy diet and exercise, a good cleanse really helps you jumpstart weight loss and energy to give you a fresh beginning in the New Year.

My husband and I are preparing to do a cleanse starting at the end of this week. I was intrigued when I recently learned that you can have a "brand new" liver in about a 5 month period if you treat your body right. I am not looking to lose weight from this (though I NEED to)...I just want to BE HEALTHY!! I am tired of headaches, sluggishness, being tired and basically just feeling worn down...I will check back in...I am planning on the "after" version of me being much better than the "before" version...

I have done a fasting cleanse with lemons, cayenne pepper and agave nectar (used instead of maple syrup since it's got a lower glycemic index sugar) and enjoyed it but only did it for a day or two. I am borderline hypoglycemic so I get a little nervous about not eating for too many days. So if I do a cleanse with food, do you suggest a pill that you take daily or are there more effective kinds? What about vitamins?

Cleansing helps me feel lighter both physically, mentally and emotionally, like there is a spring in my step. I feel renewed and cleared out. I feel like my energy returns. It feels like a spa vacation from the inside out!

Cleansing is the surest way to boost my health and renew energy! Toxins clog everything in the body, even the cell walls, which reduces the ability to absorb nutrients and dispose of accumulating waste. Feeling ligth and bright is the easiest way to describe the cleanse process, although a day or two in the beginning can make you wish the process was already done! It's worth it all; however, from improved memory and concentration to reduced bloating and weight loss! I start my new one next week!

I have never done a cleanse before. I have looked into it many times, but have never made that leap. This year is the year I am actually getting serious about my health and my weight. I'm going to stop simply talking about it and actually do something about it!

I am no stranger to detoxing. I went on a hard core one that lasted about 2 months. it conpletely changed me for the better. I lost 25 pounds and all the little irritating ailments I was dealing with disappeared. And the food was natural and delicious!

Good advice. I started a month ago (I've got a long way to go). What better to pick up the spirits during cold and gloomy winter than to be doing something really healthy for your body. And, if the cleanse makes you want to snuggle into your bed, well, all the better! (No one is going to argue with you over that).

In years past I used to do two body cleanses a year. Recently I have gotten busy and have been just "putting it off". I'll be stopping at Wholefoods tonight on my way home to purchase one! This article reminded me how great I felt after doing a two week cleanse!! I had more energy, ate healthier and felt lighter in a sense which made exercising easier for me. Hope everyone has a healthy start to the new year!

I'm on day 6 of a planned 14 day master cleanse juice fast - this will be my second. The first significantly reduced my need for some of my prescription meds and I felt GREAT after! It's challenging to do a juice fast - you have to be prepared and ready for the detox symptoms but it is so worth it!

A New Beginning, A New Chance says ...
After being diagnosed with cancer, my goal this year is to only eat healthy foods. Starting with a cleanse was the perfect mindset for me to begin the best part of my life. It represents a new beginning "out with the bad, in with the good". I believe most people who are living with more challenging diagnoses do so by setting new beginnings for themselves. I am not focused on the end, but rather how wonderful it feels to have a brand new start with a mind and body cleanse!

I am 6 days into my cleanse. I have really been paying attention to what I put into my body, haven't eaten chocolate or had caffeine. No chips or other fast foods. I feel lighter and ready to start the new year off right.
