Many people want to start off each year with dietary changes as part of a weight loss program. It's a good chance for a fresh start, so I like to help them make the right food choices and ensure that exercise is part of the overall regime. Something else that I've been recommended for the past five years, which has become the most important part of this program, is cleansing. DrIt's one of the major - and often missing - components of a successful weight loss plan. I consider it one of the three keys to kick-starting a diet.
  1. Optimizing digestion: get a good cleanse supplement to help you get things "moving."
  2. Managing your food intake: don't just eat fewer calories, eat better calories - more fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and lean meats (try to eat organic foods when possible.)
  3. Becoming more active: Get out there and start moving. Make your exercise something you enjoy, and it'll become part of your routine.
How does a cleanse optimize digestion? A cleanse propels your body's digestion system to help clear out the "junk" you may have accumulated over the holidays. With the right cleanse supplement, two weeks is about what it should take to get your body the momentum it needs to help you reach your fitness potential. Not all cleanse supplements are alike. Look for a good cleanse supplement - they're not all the same. A good cleanse supplement program can give you the two-week "recharging" your health batteries need. The supplement should include:
  • Fiber to help pull out the bad and get things moving. You want to go with a fiber supplement that expands - but does so gently - in your intestines to scrub toxins and excess waste away from intestinal walls and helps prime your body for fitness. It doesn't give the bad stuff any place to hide or a chance to "double back" and be re-absorbed. Oddly, many cleanse supplements don't include fiber, so choose carefully.
  • A natural, gentle laxative formula.Look for a laxative formula that listens to the needs of your body. Make sure it's a gentle, predictable laxative with no harsh stimulant ingredients to make you feel off balance - just botanicals that help get things "moving."
  • Support for your liver, too.The liver is always busy. It helps the body keep the good and get rid of the bad. Using an herbal supplement that includes milk thistle can do an amazing job of supporting the liver's ability to detoxify the body. One thing to look for when choosing a milk thistle product is that it is absorbable (look for products bound to phosphotidylcholine).
Used in conjunction with a healthy diet and exercise, a good cleanse really helps you jumpstart weight loss and energy to give you a fresh beginning in the New Year.

In the past-I've done short term detox and cleanse. It really revs up your energy about the 3rd day into the cleanse.

I have been cleansing once every three months using various brands. The personnel at Whole Foods has been a huge help in directing me to products to be used, the cleanse makes me feel pretty outside and healthy in my own body. Would recommend to all.

I tried the "master cleanse" as my 2010 new year resolution....I only lasted a day! This cleanse is much more realistic, thanks!

I have always been afraid to try a cleansing. I am one way or the other, plugged up or liquid. I have to ride a bus to and from work so I cannot stop when I want to.

A good way to start the year, and good diet advice generally. Less fat and carbs, more fruit and veggies; add some moderate exercise (an hour a day) and it's all good. One quibble: with a bran muffin in the a.m, an apple for lunch, and broccoli at supper(steamed "to the tooth", then briefly sauteed in olive oil, dash of sesame oil, squeeze of lemon) there should be enough fiber in the diet for "regularity", so don't get over-enthusiastic with the laxatives - you just want to lose that "junk in the trunk", not the beneficial intestinal fauna that aid digestion.

I truly believe in cleansing. I've tried Isagenix but its really hard to do a detox when you have a busy schedule and kids to feed. If I could just stay out of the kitchen and just concentrate on me during that time it would be more beneficial. I look at it as a cleansing of the mind as well as the body.

Dr. Morello gives some great advice. I have several digestive disorders, which I have been hospitalized for on several occasions. "Cleansing" is something that I know is important, but my system is so compromised from autoimmune disorders, diverticulitis, Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (Classical), and a neuroendocrine tumor disorder that I am literally afraid of trying most cleansing products. His advice to use one with fiber that expands SLOWLY really struck a cord with me -- that way I won't have the awful "scaping, bleeding" sensation that comes with some fiber products. The idea of milk thistle for liver support rang "true" to me as well.

Cleansing is a great way to get started on a new year. It clears the system to perform at its best and make the most of the nutrition coming into the body.

Best cleanse I can recommend is a cleansing diet. 80-10-10 low fat raw vegan will clean you up at a pace you can stand. The diet is whole, fresh, ripe, raw, organic fruits and veggies. This dietary plan was originated by Dr. Doug Graham and you can purchase his book online or visit his website www.foodnsport.com. Good luck and best wishes to all!
