Organic Cherries on Sale This Friday Only

By Jennifer Cheng, July 6, 2011  |  Meet the Blogger  |  More Posts by Jennifer Cheng
Cherry Fest is in full swing around here! We love celebrating all things cherry, especially when they’re at their seasonal sweetest. You too can join in on our cheery cherry festivities by picking up cherries for $2.99 a pound when they go on sale this Friday. (It’s a one day only sale, so make sure you stop in on Friday, July 8th to catch this deal!)
$x.xx = amount of savings will vary
How do you pick the best cherries? Here are some tips that we like to follow:
  • Check the stems—fresh cherries have green stems
  • Give them a feel—cherries should be firm, no soft spots or bruising
  • Look for the good color—ideally deep, bright red to mahogany
  • Give them the once over—fruit should be free of insect damage and pitting (little indentations caused by dehydration)
  • Give them a taste—be sure the amount of sugar in the fruit is high (also called the Brix Test)
If you love cherries like I do and just can’t get enough, check out these recipes to plan a meal featuring cherries in every dish—perfect for a cherry-themed summer dinner party! Extra sweets: For a no-heat dessert treat, try this No-Cook Cherry Vanilla Pudding with Lemon Wafers. And we would be completely remiss if we didn’t mention a classic cherry pie! Still can’t get enough cherry goodness? Find more cherry recipes here. What will you do with your cherries this summer?

What's the best way to freeze cherries? And once frozen, what's the best way to defrost them to eat? Thanks!

I love cherries and always stock up when they are in season. One of my newest recipes is Cherry Lemonade. See recipe here http://www.making-healthy-choices.com/drinking-enough-water.html (all recipes at bottom of page)

Hey Ben, To freeze cherries, simple pit them and put them in a container in the freezer. When you want to eat them they only need to be defrosted for a short time (they are also good straight out of the freezer). You can also throw them frozen into certain recipes like smoothies, ice creams and my cherry lemonade (see my previous post above)

It's easy to freeze cherries, just pit them and spread them on a large cookie sheet. Once frozen, transfer them into a large freezer bag. But I'm not sure how fresh tasting they will be after defrosting. I think they'd be better to use in recipes. They'd probably work in smoothies too.

I like to use defrosted frozen cherries in oatmeal and yogurt. The process of freezing and defrosting makes them nice and soft (and juicy)!

Just got back from Whole Foods and left with 6lbs of these delicious cherries. They are sweet organic cherries that I can't eat enough of them, they are soo sweet and juicy. I pitted 3.lbs that I'm going to freeze for smoothies, the rest will be eaten as is. Bought a few pints of the biggest organic blueberries I EVER seen, these berries were as big as a small grape!!!
