Satsumas on Sale This Friday Only

By Jennifer Cheng, November 30, 2011  |  Meet the Blogger  |  More Posts by Jennifer Cheng
5-pound boxes of satsumas will be on sale this Friday, December 2nd for $4.99 per box. These citrus gems are at the perfect peak of their season during the holiday, so to celebrate citrus and holiday seasons, we’re putting them on sale! These boxes of satsumas will be on sale for one day only, so make sure you stop in our stores this Friday to pick up your share (and don’t forget to grab some to share with friends)! Limits will vary by region, but you can contact your store for details. Super sweet, juicy, seedless and easy to peel, the satsuma is a variety of mandarin orange and a cousin to the clementine. Satsuma season is, well, short and sweet, lasting from October to December so you’ve got to enjoy this sweet citrus burst of flavor while they’re here. Sweet Satsuma Ideas
  • Add segments to sweet or savory salads, cheese trays and appetizer platters
  • Tuck into lunchboxes for a peel-and-eat snack (This small-sized citrus is just right for kids!)
  • Use the juice for cocktails, salad dressings, marinades and glazes
  • Add satsuma zest to baked goods, dressings, sauces, glazes and other recipes
  • Create an edible centerpiece
  • Give a basket of satsumas as a sweet holiday gift
Try some of these recipes to take advantage of Satsuma season and our one-day sale. They just might find their way to your holiday table! A wonderful appetizer or hors d’oeuvres for a holiday party, Two-Bite Shrimp Pancakes with Satsuma Relish are impressive and delicious. Celery Citrus Salad with Balsamic and Feta combines crunchy celery and delightfully sweet, juicy citrus—a perfect recipe to show off satsumas! For a quick dessert or brunch dish that is perfect for this season of entertaining, Panettone Parfaits are an easy layered treat with satsumas delivering a burst of flavor between toasted almonds, creamy vanilla yogurt and sweet holiday panettone. Satsumas add a bright citrusy spark both in the dressing and in this fresh seasonal salad, Spinach Salad with Aduki Beans and Satsuma Vinaigrette. Mark your calendar! Our one day only sale on boxes of satsumas is this Friday, December 2nd so make sure you stop by!

This is great! Can you tell me where your Satsuma mandarins are from? I usually order from Miller's Citrus Grove in California but I will come over on Friday instead!

I would love to purchase a box of the Satsumas;however, two years ago, from a local supermarket, not WholeFoods, I bought a box of the Satsumas. Because the peeling was so soft and sweet, I ate was comfortable eating that as well as the delicious juices. I became ill each time and knew it couldn't be the oranges. When i inquired at the store, they informed me that the oranges are routinely sprayed with a chemical to retain the orange color orange. Wow! So, my question to you is what is the truth about the Satsumas that you will be selling? Sprayed or not? Thank you very much.

California Satsumas? Why not Louisiana citrus? Louisiana has some of the best tasting citrus you could ever imagine. Buy fresh, buy local. Support your local farmers.

Dear Whole Foods,Are the Satsumas organically grown? If yes, I'll be in to buy some! If not, I'll pass . Before Whole Foods bought out Green Life there was much more organically grown produce. Now I have to shop very carefully to find organic. That is mainly why I shop at "Health Food" stores. Otherwise, I could find the same conventionally grown food at Fresh Market or a regular grocery store. I drive past several of them just to come to your store. It's discouraging! Surely the owners and management are aware of the voluminous research proving the VASTLY more beneficial properties of organically grown fruits, vegetables, nuts and grain over conventionally grown and produced "food". I still have hope that Whole Foods will become more health motivated. Thank you for your interest in receiving comments from your customers. I would very much appreciate hearing Whole Foods perspective on my concern. Sincerely, Helen Andrews

@Claudia: Nowhere in this ad do I see that these satsumas are organic. Never buy nonorganic tree fruit! @Helen Andrews: You are correct to be concerned. I never, ever buy fruit (or veg) unless it has the number '9' at the beginning of the number sequence on the label.

Everyone, please notice how the several queries about whether these are organic satsumas are not answered at all. The other questions are answered, not the ones about organic. SOOOOO. One should assume, from this thundering silence, that these are conventional satsumas. If they were organic, you can bet the organic questions would have been answered. So call the store to clarify, talk to the produce manager and register your preference for organic produce and then shop for your satsumas elsewhere. Organic citrus are the only way to go. And Boo to WFM for dodging this issue.

My suspicion is that non-organic citrus is heavily laden with pesticide sprays throughout the growing cycle. I'll pass on this sale - good health is priceless - and keep looking for the ORGANIC satsumas for the family - they are always a favorite!
