USA Wild-Caught Atlantic White Shrimp on Sale This Friday Only

By Jennifer Cheng, October 11, 2011  |  Meet the Blogger  |  More Posts by Jennifer Cheng
Want to know the best-kept secret in seafood? They’re wild-caught Atlantic white shrimp and they’ll be on sale this Friday for $7.99 per pound. It’s a one day only sale, so make sure you stop by on Friday, October 14th to pick up your share of shell-on, raw white shrimp! (Some stores may have a 10-pound limit.) These sweet, tender 26/30 count (large) shrimp are so good that you’ll have a hard time keeping their deliciousness a secret. Caught by US shrimpers at the peak of the season and frozen within hours of catch, we don’t allow sulfites and phosphate preservatives so that you can enjoy the naturally sweet taste of the shrimp. These truly special shrimp are only available in the fall, so make sure you get them while they’re here to make the perfect fall meal. For shrimp inspiration, I turn to a favorite movie quote that you may recognize: “Shrimp is the fruit of the sea. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, sauté it. There’s shrimp kabobs, shrimp creole, shrimp gumbo. Pan-fried, deep-fried, stir-fried. There’s pineapple shrimp, lemon shrimp, coconut shrimp, pepper shrimp, shrimp soup, shrimp stew, shrimp salad, shrimp and potatoes, shrimp burger, shrimp sandwich. That’s…that’s about it.” – Bubba, Forrest Gump That’s a pretty comprehensive list, but he left out my personal favorite, the classic shrimp cocktail (with a cocktail sauce heavy on the horseradish). We’ve got some recipe suggestions for shrimp here, too. If you love shrimp as much as Bubba and I do, let us know your favorite way to enjoy shrimp. And don’t forget to stop by this Friday to pick up some USA wild-caught Atlantic white shrimp!

Shrimping can be very harmful to the sea bed and to other marine life caught up in the trawler's net. Normally, I trust Whole Foods to make sure that appropriate practices are used, but there is nothing in this ad about sustainability etc.

I've never purchased seafood at Whole Foods before, so pardon my ignorance, but would I be able to purchase this shrimp peeled and de-veined? Thanks!

I bought the Xlarge shrimp when they were on sale a month or so ago. Wished I had bought several pounds of them. Will definately be there on Friday and will be buying at least 2/3 lbs. We sauted the last bunch in a lime flavored butter and sprinkled them with a rub both prepared by Whole Foods. They were truly absolutely fab. Friday cannot be here sooner enough.

Can you please tell me what part of the Atlantic this shrimp is from, or is it the Gulf of Mexico? Thank you!

My favorite local product is our local Pioneer Valley (Western Massachusetts) organic produce. We are so fortunate to live in such a fertile valley - Connecticut River Valley - with lots of great organic farmers. I am so pleased that our Hadley MA Whole Foods Market carries so much of it.

While I appreciate Whole Foods offering of wild-caught USA shrimp, I still have questions about the catch. Do the shrimpers use turtle excluding nets? What other by-catch do they bring up and kill? How much destruction of the sea floor occurs as the trawler's nets scour across it? I love shrimp, but I can't in good conscious purchase it unless the above issues are addressed.

@Karen Each of our regions sources their shrimp from different locations based on shipping distance, quality, etc. The best way to get the most accurate and complete information about where the shrimp you are purchasing is caught would be to contact your community's Whole Foods Market directly. Blog Update: Freezing. Hello again. There have also been a few questions about freezing the shrimp you don't gobble up immediately. Yes, shrimp freezes pretty well. You'll want to ensure you've removed as much air from your freezing container as possible and try to use the shrimp within the month. Frozen shrimp can keep for several months depending on the packaging. Devices that remove all the air from packaging will exponentially increase freezer life. SO... stock up tomorrow for shrimp next week, and the week after. :)

@Donna Yes some stores sell the deveined and peeled shrimp. Typically these shrimp are more expensive due to the extra labor effort but if you reach out to your community Whole Foods Market directly, a Team Member from your store will be happy to let you know about their deveining services and the size of the shrimp on promotion. The link below will help you identify the store contact information. http://wholefoodsmarket.com/stores/

@Linda Sorry Linda. Unfortunately, these One Day Deals are such great deals that we are unable to offer them anywhere but in store, day of sale. If you have a friendly neighbor that's coming for the sale anyway, our per-person limit is pretty high. Sure you'd owe them a favor but it could be worth it. ;)

@Emily The shrimp that's on promotion is not deveined. However, your seafood department may offer a deviening service for a small cost.

Is the shrimp sold frozen or previously frozen and defrosted?

Are they easy peel (deveined in the shell)?
10/13/2011 11:03:50 PM CDT
janejohnson says ...
@Lyawanna Well, I guess easy is subjective. Sometimes you can just get in a great rhythm and even non-deveined (in shell) shrimp can become a cinch. I don't believe the sale shrimp were deveined since this drives labor resources and would be difficult to provide on a mass (sale) scale. I hope you got your fill during the sale!

@Karen The sale shrimp are/were definitely Wild-Caught Atlantic White Shrimp. I hope you got your fill. :)

@Carol Good question. That really comes down to personal palate. Some say that Atlantic shrimp are fresher tasting and less "fishy" but there are certainly people that say the opposite. Give it a try and let us know the differences you see. :)
