Living in Florida, we go to the beach a lot. What goes into my family's body is important to me so, i always make sure i pack a healthy pic-nic, especially for the beach. I make sure to include granola bars, fresh fruit, sandwiches on whole wheat bread and plenty of juices and water.

Our family loves watermelon. The produce rep at the Whole Foods in San Ramon showed me exactly how to pick the perfect watermelon! He told me to hold it in my hand and tap it, it should sound like a drum and vibrate nicely. It should also feel heavier than it looks like it should be. Watermelon is the BEST fruit to bring on an outing! Thanks! ~Nancy Wilson Pleasanton, CA

There is nothing better to take to the beach than good old no-stir Almond Butter and hearty bread. Add to the sandwich your favorite fruit (apple, pear, coconut, apricot, etc) or nuts (chopped peanuts, pecans, cashews). It won't spoil, it's easy clean-up and every kid just loves it. OK, if you have to do it, take the jam but make it organic and don't forget the spreading knife.

Mango slices with lime & chili powder or cayenne pepper sprinkled on it. Goes great with a jug of ice tea. Toss in some frozen water bottles and you're set.

Cold water is a must for the beach! I love, love fresh fruit, cut in chunks at the shore, too. When the juice gets drippy, it's time for a dip! Blueberries are in season at this time, so I may freeze some to have them cold. Watermelon is classic summertime fare--and having it at the beach is a Japanese tradition. Granola bars are great to refuel. Salty snacks are a nice touch, but I find nuts take on a stale flavor at the beach. Finally, cookies. I don't know why, but I really enjoy having chocolate chip oatmeal cookies at the beach--I think it has sort of become a tradition with me.
