World “Cup” Music

By Dan Storper, June 4, 2010  |  Meet the Blogger  |  More Posts by Dan Storper
Congratulations to Sarah from Miami for being randomly chosen as the winner of the African CD collection!
Dan Storper is the CEO and Founder of Putumayo World Music. With the opening of the Soccer World Cup in South Africa on June 10th, the first on African soil, a new milestone will have been achieved in this country’s remarkable journey. Until 20 years ago, South Africa, with its apartheid policies, was a pariah isolated from the rest of the world. Over the past 20 years, with Nelson Mandela’s moral leadership and intense desire for reconciliation, true democracy for all of its citizens and economic revival, South Africa has become Africa’s leading success story. (Read on for a chance to win some Putumayo CDs.) South Africa’s music has long had an extraordinary impact on the world’s music. In the 1950s, South African Solomon Linda’s “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” became a worldwide hit. In the 1960s, Miriam Makeba’s “Pata Pata” and Hugh Masakela’s “Grazin in the Grass” became top 10 hits around the world. Ladysmith Black Mambazo and South African musical styles provided the foundation of Paul Simon’s album Graceland. The Lion King and other Broadway shows and Hollywood films put South Africa front and center in the 1990s and beyond. Putumayo’s South Africa CD celebrates the best of South Africa’s extraordinary musical diversity, from Afro-jazz and township jive to mbaqanga and Afropop. The album features legends like Miriam Makeba, rising stars such as Phinda and Nibs van der Spuy and closes with the rousing a capella Soweto Gospel Choir. It also includes a recipe for a vegetarian version of a classic South African dish, Lentil Bobotie, contributed by leading South African chef Amos Diamini. A portion of the proceeds benefits Artists for a New South Africa and their work to advance human rights, combat HIV/AIDS, help children orphaned by the disease and educate and empower youth. Available for free download here, Bholoja’s “Mbombela” is an example of the emerging African singer-songwriter movement. Dividing his time between neighboring Swaziland and South Africa, Bholoja sings this song in SiSwati, one of the 11 official South African languages. Enjoy! Note: you can simply listen online using the player below, or you can “right click” to download the mp3 file.

You can pick up Putumayo’s South Africa in our stores now. How will you be celebrating the World Cup? With music maybe? Let us know in a comment below by June 23rd and we’ll choose a random winner to receive a five CD Putumayo Africa collection.

The music is really a great beat. Something to cook by, workout to or just listen to as an upbeat sound.

The Putumayo CD's have always been a part of my music library. I am not a big sports person...either watching it or playing it....but I do love "playing" music!! When I listen to the world music CD's, it allows me to travel to the places I have dreamed of going to. I feel as though I'm sitting in some little cafe or dancing to the rhythms of another culture!!! When I'm stuck in traffic or dreading to go to work, I pop in one of my world music CD's and get transported!!!! Sure helps me to change my negative attitude!!!

I'll be celebrating the World Cup the same way I celebrate all big sports events--by reading my friends'comments on Facebook to keep updated on the latest developments.

Hearing this great music instead of those horrible horns would make this World Cup truly great.

I love sports but don't have the channels showing the World Cup, so I stay informed via newspapers and online blogs. I love the cds that Putamayo has put our over the years, accumulating about 30 in my collection. My favorites are the afro-jazz and Cuban styles with African influences. They all just make you want to dance and smile.

My husband keeps me informed of the changes in status and the scores. I have not been fortunate enough to watch a match yet. I've been working too much! I plan to go to a local bar that features the matches with my husband soon and we shall wine n dine and dance to the music at the pub... all while watching the world cup!

During the World Cup, I'm not glued to a TV, Instead, I'm getting fit; good health for ME. I run, I walk, what more do I do? Yoga, Pilates, and Zumba, too: while listening to music to fill my soul; celebrating our world: unified, whole.

I will be celebrating the World Cup w/ my mama via AT&T. My Mama loves soccer and knows all the details. I enjoy watching the game as well and think it is totally cool that the games are being played in South Africa. Also, through the televised games in both English and Spanish stations I get to learn a little bit about the host country. It would be great to win the cd pack to learn about Africa through its music as well.

I love how the world cup has the ability to bring together countries across the globe, and lets us— if only for a brief moment— forget all the racial, political and economic problems. I will be celebrating by cheering on the U.S. and by cheering on the world!

I'm a teacher and like to have my students learn about all different aspects of a country that we're studying - including music. I could use the cd set in my classroom.
