World “Cup” Music

By Dan Storper, June 4, 2010  |  Meet the Blogger  |  More Posts by Dan Storper
Congratulations to Sarah from Miami for being randomly chosen as the winner of the African CD collection!
Dan Storper is the CEO and Founder of Putumayo World Music. With the opening of the Soccer World Cup in South Africa on June 10th, the first on African soil, a new milestone will have been achieved in this country’s remarkable journey. Until 20 years ago, South Africa, with its apartheid policies, was a pariah isolated from the rest of the world. Over the past 20 years, with Nelson Mandela’s moral leadership and intense desire for reconciliation, true democracy for all of its citizens and economic revival, South Africa has become Africa’s leading success story. (Read on for a chance to win some Putumayo CDs.) South Africa’s music has long had an extraordinary impact on the world’s music. In the 1950s, South African Solomon Linda’s “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” became a worldwide hit. In the 1960s, Miriam Makeba’s “Pata Pata” and Hugh Masakela’s “Grazin in the Grass” became top 10 hits around the world. Ladysmith Black Mambazo and South African musical styles provided the foundation of Paul Simon’s album Graceland. The Lion King and other Broadway shows and Hollywood films put South Africa front and center in the 1990s and beyond. Putumayo’s South Africa CD celebrates the best of South Africa’s extraordinary musical diversity, from Afro-jazz and township jive to mbaqanga and Afropop. The album features legends like Miriam Makeba, rising stars such as Phinda and Nibs van der Spuy and closes with the rousing a capella Soweto Gospel Choir. It also includes a recipe for a vegetarian version of a classic South African dish, Lentil Bobotie, contributed by leading South African chef Amos Diamini. A portion of the proceeds benefits Artists for a New South Africa and their work to advance human rights, combat HIV/AIDS, help children orphaned by the disease and educate and empower youth. Available for free download here, Bholoja’s “Mbombela” is an example of the emerging African singer-songwriter movement. Dividing his time between neighboring Swaziland and South Africa, Bholoja sings this song in SiSwati, one of the 11 official South African languages. Enjoy! Note: you can simply listen online using the player below, or you can “right click” to download the mp3 file.

You can pick up Putumayo’s South Africa in our stores now. How will you be celebrating the World Cup? With music maybe? Let us know in a comment below by June 23rd and we’ll choose a random winner to receive a five CD Putumayo Africa collection.

I first heard the incredible selections offered by Putumayo at the Museum of Natural History's in New York's gift shop--they had headphones set up, and i was able to sample the various styles from all over the world. i have been a performer of World music for over 30 years now ( when there was no category for it!)---Keep up the good work! Go world cup!

I love watching the World Cup with my kids -- like Putumayo's music collections, it reminds of how much more there is to the world. We're celebrating today with watermelon :)

My 19 year old daughter is watching the world cup, so I watch too. I love Putumayo music and have being buying the CDs since they first came on the market. I love that Putumayo introduced us all to "world music" before it was fashionable!

I've seen these Putumayo cds in stores and always wondered what they were about. What I hear I like! I'm an international wine lover so for World Cup I'll try some new wines from other parts of the world so far untasted!

We have enjoyed other Putumayo anthologies and are excited about the World Cup (which we get catch as catch can). I downloaded Bholoja’s “Mbombela” cut. It was lovely. We danced in the living room. My 8 year old soccer playing son thought it was great. Not only good for dancing, but the dog, who tired of dancing thought it made a perfect accompaniment for a belly rub.

Thanks for the music clip. I have always enjoyed all types of music but have to say Putamayo CDs are always the greatest! Somehow they always put together the perfect selection. Not much of a sports fan but I know my little Sister will watch every minute and let me know who, what, when and where. Hope I win!

I love the World Cup! Many years ago I watched Sheffield play the US and got to meet the players after the game. It was a fantastic time. Then and now, music has been such a big part of my life My husband and I loved listening to world and just a wide variety of music so much we opened our own small living room concert house. Now that we have a child, he is exposed to our varied palate, and has shown an interest in music himself at 2! I hope to win this set for him! Love the song!

Through music and soccer we are introducing our 5 year old son to cultures, sounds, rhythms, rhymes, names, colors, flags and faces that are different from our own. Fortunately for us, he loves music and soccer and so it's a beautiful match.

I will be celebrating with my own personal "vuvuzela" that I picked up in South Africa. This traditonal horn is blown at sports stadiums through out South Africa. Considering how this controversial(and some say extremely annoying) horn creates an ear splitting hum in the background at soccer matches - I think I will play it in the safety if my home when I am alone !!!!

I have a half dozen Putumayo CDs and I love them. The music is so uplifting -- I play it in my car all of the time. I got them all at Whole Foods, my favorite grocery store. The Denver Art Museum also carries them and plays them sometimes in one of the open spaces. I am a volunteer in the shop and always recommend them for gifts. Thanks for the new CD. Go Putumayo!
