World “Cup” Music

By Dan Storper, June 4, 2010  |  Meet the Blogger  |  More Posts by Dan Storper
Congratulations to Sarah from Miami for being randomly chosen as the winner of the African CD collection!
Dan Storper is the CEO and Founder of Putumayo World Music. With the opening of the Soccer World Cup in South Africa on June 10th, the first on African soil, a new milestone will have been achieved in this country’s remarkable journey. Until 20 years ago, South Africa, with its apartheid policies, was a pariah isolated from the rest of the world. Over the past 20 years, with Nelson Mandela’s moral leadership and intense desire for reconciliation, true democracy for all of its citizens and economic revival, South Africa has become Africa’s leading success story. (Read on for a chance to win some Putumayo CDs.) South Africa’s music has long had an extraordinary impact on the world’s music. In the 1950s, South African Solomon Linda’s “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” became a worldwide hit. In the 1960s, Miriam Makeba’s “Pata Pata” and Hugh Masakela’s “Grazin in the Grass” became top 10 hits around the world. Ladysmith Black Mambazo and South African musical styles provided the foundation of Paul Simon’s album Graceland. The Lion King and other Broadway shows and Hollywood films put South Africa front and center in the 1990s and beyond. Putumayo’s South Africa CD celebrates the best of South Africa’s extraordinary musical diversity, from Afro-jazz and township jive to mbaqanga and Afropop. The album features legends like Miriam Makeba, rising stars such as Phinda and Nibs van der Spuy and closes with the rousing a capella Soweto Gospel Choir. It also includes a recipe for a vegetarian version of a classic South African dish, Lentil Bobotie, contributed by leading South African chef Amos Diamini. A portion of the proceeds benefits Artists for a New South Africa and their work to advance human rights, combat HIV/AIDS, help children orphaned by the disease and educate and empower youth. Available for free download here, Bholoja’s “Mbombela” is an example of the emerging African singer-songwriter movement. Dividing his time between neighboring Swaziland and South Africa, Bholoja sings this song in SiSwati, one of the 11 official South African languages. Enjoy! Note: you can simply listen online using the player below, or you can “right click” to download the mp3 file.

You can pick up Putumayo’s South Africa in our stores now. How will you be celebrating the World Cup? With music maybe? Let us know in a comment below by June 23rd and we’ll choose a random winner to receive a five CD Putumayo Africa collection.

Wow this download is awesome! As it turns out, I'm part of a CD club and my month is coming up and I'm going to include this song. I'm not much of a sports fan these days so I probably won't be watching the World Cup. Nevertheless, this music is amazing and I'd love a chance to win the set!

I will celebrate the World Cup by watching every single game, cooking some themed food from some of the countries represented (Of course using Whole Foods ingredients !). And by doing some volunteer work at a community garden in Riverside.

We too will be cooking some organic party food for the game. I remember how difficult it was to find world music. Musical Starstreams (radio show)would play some in the early 80's so that got me hooked. I will be rocking out in my chair while the game is on or anytime I hear something as good as this.

I'm 14 years old and just started listening to Reggae music. I found an African Reggae CD at Whole Foods and just listened to it - I really like that the lyrics are in different languages so that I can pay more attention to the music and not get caught up on the words. The lyrics are more like another instrument. I like that the songs were more mellow than Jamaican Reggae. I just got back from a school trip in Costa Rice and the African music reminds me of there. It would be really cool to win the 5 CDS, 'cause I don't have enough money to buy them all. If I'm too young to win, you could send them to my mom, Ann Gerard. Oh, by the way, I do plan to watch some of the World Cup. It seems more like a country competing, not just a team wanting a paycheck. It's really cool that it is in South Africa.

I am hoping to watch some of the semi-final and final games of the World Cup. A friend is recording them for me. I probably won't listen to music, but I do have some of Ladysmith Black Mambazo's music and enjoy listening to it occasionaly. I also enjoy the song they did on one of the Josh Groban albums.

Music is such an education! I have just about all of Putumayos CD's. Its what I listen to while at work. I feel transported to the lands that are being played. And, in the heat of summer, what can be better to listen to,but music from the tropics, or dessert, or equator countries!. And, yes, World cup, like this music is the real meaning of 'global'. Thank you!

Lovely music! ...and as for the World Cup, my favorite moments are when the children walk in with the teams.I love watching the players as their anthems are played and the exchange of pennants at the coin toss.Even though South Africa lost today, I could see the opposing team players exchanging shirts..... and yes! some exciting soccer too! ;)

Thanks for the download ... Putamayo CDs are awesome! ... I'll be watching the World Cup matches at my favorite local Micro Brewery, drinking my favorite hopped beer, with my daughter and friends having a homemade root beer ice cream float. World Cup, your favorite beverage and Putamayo music ... a great combination.

I studied abroad in Cameroon, so I'm supporting them in the Cup. Off to a bad start (lost 1-0 to Japan), but watching the games makes me super nostalgic for the Africa Cup games I watched while I was there. Music was a huge part of it. I can still sing the songs that came on during the commercials during the Africa Cup! (But they were good.)

Great beat, had me dancing in my seat. I'm celebrating the World Cup by catching glimpses of the games when I can. I imagine that I'm coaching a World Cup game as I coach my under six team. Soccer is such fun! Or should I say Football. :-)

Having been to SA in the later 1990's - everything SA is a magnet for me (food, music, art, culture), I also have two sons who play soccer and have been interested in the matches. The Putumayo music has always had a spot on my shelf and players - would love to add more!

The student union building at my university has set up a huge television projector screen on which each and every world cup game is being shown live. My regular "coffee break" from my lab has turned into a "run down to the student union to watch a few minutes of the game" break!

Putumayo recordings are refreshingly diverse. No need to worry about feeding the wallets of already-rich pop stars. Putumayo is traveling the world helping to discover the undiscovered! Thanks. Bonnie
