This is the chief communications role for a company with $13 billion in sales, 370 stores in 3 countries and 80,000 Team Members. This leader has direct responsibility for 80 communicators and influences hundreds more in Whole Foods Market’s 12 operating regions.
NOT at all a typical CMO-type job. This is an amazing role for a seasoned communicator, facilitator and brand marketer to build consensus within an innovative company that thrives on an entrepreneurial spirit.

Reports directly to Co-CEO, Walter Robb, and will be part of the Senior Global Leadership Team.
Head up external communications to: facilitate the company’s brand and message evolution, promote our culture and quality standards with all stakeholders, increase brand visibility, and improve our perception and reputation.
Oversee Whole Foods Market’s Global Communications team, which consists of Marketing, Public Relations, Digital, and Promotional Commerce sub teams.
Manage across multiple lines of communication to create consensus and help establish a shared vision.
Lead with consciousness to help shape our company’s brand and communications strategy to build the brand and help drive sales, while also leading to increased awareness, relevance and respect among target audiences.
Ensure a healthy workplace, team cohesion and effectiveness, and a positive work climate.
Transform and lead communication strategy that is tied to our company mission to reach our customers, Team Members, supplier partners, investors, communities and the greater environment.
Ignite energy around our brand and the integrated store and digital experiences companywide in a comprehensive fashion that will retain and acquire shoppers while building loyalty.
Develop and execute big ideas to engage our audiences in radical and innovative ways.
Celebrate our empowered and autonomous structure and gather the company-wide collective creativity of an inspiring retail culture to express the brand fully to a global audience.
Contribute to our business objectives by communicating what makes the company relevant, authentic and unique; do so with transparency, consistency, authenticity and creativity.
Lead communications thoughtfully, creatively and proactively; continually seek out opportunities in advance of an event, announcement, decision or situation.

Serve as a primary leader for extending our in-store customer experience into digital touch-points including mobile applications, ecommerce, social channels and websites.
Sponsor the development and implementation of our future state of customer loyalty and analytics capabilities.
Lead the co-creation and implementation of our seamless digital customer experience strategy.
Successful track record of managing a large team.
Extensive knowledge of and hands on experience with working in communications, branding, in-store/retail marketing, public/media relations and perception/issues management.
Established roots in retail and brand marketing.
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills. A frequent and appropriate communicator.
Proven experience of extending brand awareness and introducing brands into new areas, and via new and alternative formats and channels.
Strong understanding of business strategy and natural ability to prioritize initiatives to ensure maximum impact.
Innovative problem solver and skillful, tactful negotiator.
Proficient understanding of financials and budget management to ensure communications help drive compelling and measurable business results.
Advanced analytical skills with knack for interpreting trends and data, and making informed projections/assertions.
Experience with a Fortune 500 retailer, lifestyle brand or a compelling alternative.
Deep appreciation of and affinity for natural and organic foods and the associated lifestyle.
THE FINE PRINT STUFF
Requires a 4-year degree or equivalent experience and 10 years or more of relevant experience including a minimum of 4 years experience leading communications/marketing for a retailer. May hold an advanced degree.
Managing Team Members with leadership is the primary function of the position.
Subject matter expert recognized as an industry leader internally and externally.
Identifies long-term needs and opportunities and develops competitive strategies that leverage the business; determines and leads evolution of communications initiatives and industry practices.
Generally self-directed with little direction from Co-CEO or Executive Team Leader.
Includes all levels of exempt individual contributors and team leaders including project managers and functional leaders.
In a typical workday, approximately 90% of time will be sitting, 5% of time will be spent standing and 5% of time will be spent walking.
