Janine Montoya, Part Time Cake Decorator

Albuquerque, New Mexico

Janine Montoya
When and where did you get your start at Whole Foods Market?

I started part-time in the Prepared Foods department in 2001. I'd been doing cake decorating for friends and family, so when the part time Cake Decorator position came up in Bakery it was something I was really interested in, and I went for it!

A Day in the Life:

I check to see what's on the production list and what needs to be done to fill the bakery case. I also look at what special orders we have and then I start decorating! I also put cakes together, and occasionally help close the department and help customers in the front of the store.

What's it like to work part time?

My team understands that I have personal interests outside of work — I'm a full time student and I also teach yoga. I like the flexibility of working part time.

What do you like best about working at Whole Foods Market?

I enjoy the interaction with our customers. We're more knowledgeable than any other grocery retailer, and we have no issue going to find information for customers. That kind of service makes them super happy. I'm just really grateful for our customers.

What advice do you have for people considering joining the Whole Foods Market team?

I'd ask them, "What are YOU interested in?" Follow your interests and passions and you'll be able to find something for you at Whole Foods Market. We have a little bit of everything!
