What does your title mean?

I am basically a Human Resources Generalist at store level. However, "Team Member Services" implies so much more than traditional HR. My job is all about my internal customers and making sure they get good answers to whatever their questions are.

When and where did you get your start at Whole Foods Market?

I was hired in 1996 as a Bakery Team Member in the Lower Greenville store in Dallas, TX and held several different positions in a few different Dallas-area stores—from store accountant to cashier to being a member of the store leadership team—before landing in my current role.

A Day in the Life:

My days are pretty interesting. I wear many different hats. Typically, I have some duties that are very deadline-related (payroll and benefits), and then I am fielding Team Member questions throughout the day as I work with those deadlines. I also have Team leaders and my Store Leadership team in and out of the office during the day with questions and concerns. My job is the ultimate expression of our open door policy. Amazing!

A recent, memorable day:

My most memorable days are the ones where I get to help someone (which is pretty much every day). The standout moments are the ones where someone has an emergency (medical or otherwise), and I get to tell them that they qualify for a leave or time off and that they don't need to worry about their jobs while they deal with whatever is happening in their lives.

What do you like best about working at Whole Foods Market?

I love my job, but this is where I should say something about our benefits too. Last year I got to be part of this amazing thing called the Team Member Volunteer Program. I got to take 30 days off and go to India to work with Whole Planet Foundation and the Grameen Bank. If I didn't work for Whole Foods Market, I never would have had that life-changing experience. I actually went back this year with an outside organization to work with orphans in India, and I think this is going to become a yearly trip.

What advice do you have for people considering joining the Whole Foods Market team?

If you are self-directed and motivated, the sky is the limit. Whole Foods is all about empowerment and self-responsibility. It is also all about the team. We don't hoard knowledge either: If you have a question, I can guarantee there is someone who is willing to provide you with an answer. You just have to be willing to ask the question. It's an amazing place to work!! Making the jump to Whole Foods Market in 1996 was one of the best decisions I ever made.
