Mark Wilkins, Metro Educator — Food, Culture & Mission
New York, New York
- What does your title mean?
As part of the Northeast Region's Team Member Services team, I help develop curricula and plan trainings for our Team Members, with an emphasis on our Core Values, mission-related programs and of course our products! I also oversee the In-Store Facilitators and training programs for our region’s New Jersey locations.
- When and where did you get your start at Whole Foods Market?
I started in 1993 as a production baker at the Bread & Circus Bakehouse in Newton, Massachusetts.
- A Day in the Life:
In a typical day on the job I might collaborate with our regional training team on developing or reviewing new material, conduct a short training for Team Leaders or Associate Team Leaders highlighting a specific soft skill, connect with regional staff on their respective teams' training needs, and finish the day by visiting one of our stores, checking in on New Hire Orientations and new Team Members and connecting with Store leadership about specific training issues.
- A recent, memorable day:
I participated in a regional team build last month. We volunteered at the Urban Battery Farm, a one-acre, turkey-shaped farm located at the lower tip of Manhattan that grows over 80 varieties of organic vegetables and flowers. We weeded, dug trenches for compost areas and sanded and painted lots of park benches. The farm partners with over 30 NYC schools whose students learn about gardening, food and sustainability. It was so rewarding to volunteer on this small farm, right in Manhattan. Both the Whole Kids Foundation and the Whole Planet Foundation support the farm, so it was great to see it in person and get dirty. The farm is located in an area where the first farms were developed by the Dutch settlers around 1620. I thought it was so cool that the space is being farmed again and that we're now part of that tradition.
- What do you like best about working at Whole Foods Market?
The people, the products, our Core Values and mission. I enjoy knowing that we ARE making a difference both locally and globally.
- What advice do you have for people considering joining the Whole Foods Market team?
Don't limit yourself to a specific department or role. Join us, do a great job and take advantage of the opportunities as they come up.
