Six Tips for the Latest Natural Look

Mineral- or botanical-based make-up doesn’t mean neutral or boring. Follow the tips below for a fresh face that you can customize from day to night and from glam to girl-next-door.

1

Even the score. Use a tinted moisturizer to balance skin tone. Application is easy; simply put some on the pads of your fingers and pat it on like a lotion—no fancy brushes or sponges required.

2

Get centered. Discolorations and breakouts tend to congregate around eyes, mouth and nose. For youthful, glowing skin, apply concealer as needed to this central area.

3

Don’t blush. Create a warm and healthy natural look by dusting a light, matte bronzer over cheekbones and temples.

4

Get messy. For a simple smoky eye, start with eyeliner on the top lash line and all around outer rim of your lower lash line. Use a small brush to smudge the liner upwards and outwards. (Read our How-to: Smokey Eyes.)

5

Turn up the volume. Use more or less mascara, depending on the occasion. If your hair color is light, opt for a soft brown. If you’re a brunette, choose black mascara to highlight your eyes.

6

Zip your lip. Orange and coral lips are versatile enough to go from day to night, and they complement a wide variety of skin tones. Pair with ample mascara for a dewy, dramatic look.

Natural and Smokey Eyes

Natural Look Eye Makeup: Bring out the beauty in your best features with this classic look.

Easy Smokey Eye: Create a dramatic, sexy eye in a few simple steps.

HOW TO:

Smokey Eyes

For a simple version of a classic look, start with black eye pencil and a trio of complementary shadows.

smokey eye - step 1

Trace your top lash line and the outer rim of your lower lash line with black eye pencil. Gently smudge with a clean eye shadow brush.

smokey eye - step 2

Dip an eyeliner brush in the darkest eye shadow and place on base of lash line to set eye pencil. Blend and smooth over pencil line, moving out and up at the outer edge of the lash line.

smokey eye - step 3

Highlight the area below the brow with the lightest, shimmery shadow.

smokey eye - step 4

Contour your crease line with the medium shadow. Apply below brow bone in a continuous half arc, extending beyond lash line and connecting to extended lash line.

smokey eye - step 5

Finish with 2-3 coats of black mascara.

Five Must-Haves for Your Makeup Bag

Make up brushes
  1. Soft powder brush. A good brush is the key to flawless, natural-looking powder foundation. For fuller coverage, choose a fuller brush.
  2. Blush brush. Highlight your cheekbones and create a healthy glow with this contoured brush for bronzer and blush.
  3. Eye contour brush. Bring out the beauty of your eyes with smooth, even color on lids and under brow bone. (Hint: this brush is so handy, you may want more than one.)
  4. Concealer brush. Keep the focus on your features! Use a contour brush to apply and blend concealer on blemishes and discolorations.
  5. Eyelash curler. This tried-and-true tool makes eyes pop without extra product. If you plan to add mascara, apply it after curling to avoid clumps.
