It is called Dia de los Muertos in Mexico, while in Brazil it is known as Finados. In many countries throughout Europe, the holiday for celebrating life while honoring the dead is known as All Saints Day or All Souls Day, and similar ceremonies can also be found in Japan (Bon) and Korea (Chuseok). While we don’t have a specific day set aside here in the U.S., we do have vastly different regional culinary traditions that support the universal concept of nourishment during times of loss. To help with the post-funeral mourning period, family, friends, and neighbors offer condolences by bringing their best casseroles, stews, and desserts to share with one another. In today’s class, we’ll show you how to prepare a few American funeral-food classics that sustain the undeniable connection between providing food and providing comfort.

On the Menu: Deviled Eggs; Spicy Fried Chicken; Funeral Pasta Casserole with Ratatouille Vegetables; Chocolate Condolence Cake.
