August 2 is National Ice Cream Sandwich Day.

With its different textures and temperatures, the ice cream sandwich is a treat that satisfies more than one of the senses.

It’s unclear who we have to thank for this portable dessert, but we’re grateful nonetheless. Depending on where you are in the world, your ice cream sandwich can look very different from what Americans are used to. Some other countries use wafers, cake or even profiteroles instead of cookies for the top and bottom layers.

The beauty of the ice cream sandwich is that it’s very easy to make. If you’re going to bake your own cookies for the treat, make sure they’re bigger and flatter than normal so they don’t break apart. The ice cream to cookie ratio is key as well: too much ice cream, in this instance, will leave you with a mess on your hands.

Ice cream sandwiches can be easily assembled by kids or dressed up by adults. They make for a great interactive dessert after an elaborate dinner. Bake a variety of cookies and have a few different ice creams on hand and guests can practice their sandwich artistry. There’s nothing like feeling like a kid again!

Time to to enter that seed-spitting contest - August 3 is National Watermelon Day!

Summer is prime time to get your mouthful of watermelon before this seasonal fruit (or is it a vegetable?) rolls away - or explodes?!?

If you're feeling creative, experiment with other ways to get your watermelon on with these mouthwatering recipes. Chomping down not your style? You can even crush it up for a thirst-quenching way to escape the summer swelter.

Besides having an exciting effect on people, watermelon has also been associated with ... vampires? Cue the glitter and field full of flowers!

Apparently vampire watermelons "develop" when left on the ground after ten days. Then, they roll around and wreak general havoc.

So before you go to bed, you might want to go all "fruit ninja" on those possible blood-suckers springing up in the garden patch, just sayin'.

Chip, chip hooray! - August 4 is National Chocolate Chips Day!

Chopping up a chocolate bar into little morsels and putting them in a batch of cookie dough may be one of the best ideas Ruth Graves Wakefield of the Toll House Inn ever had. Since we don't know dear Ruth, it's safe to say that chocolate chip cookies are one of the best American creations to date.

But don't stop with cookies! You can pop these in pancakes, waffles, crêpes, pies, muffins, cakes or just pop them in your mouth right out of the bag (we aren't ones to judge). Or how about 100 ways to use chocolate chips to whet your inspirational appetite?

If your own prized cookie recipe requires the attendance of all-important chocolate chips, carry on! Otherwise, you may want to take a gander at this fine rendition from iReporter Cynthia Falardeau's grandmother:

Grandma Carr's Chocolate Chip Cookies
3 cups of all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon of baking soda
1 teaspoon of salt
2 sticks of sweet cream butter
3/4 cup of firmly packed brown sugar
3/4 cup of granular sugar
2 eggs
2 teaspoons of real vanilla extract
1 bag of jumbo semi-sweet chunks or jumbo chips
1 cup of nuts, M&M’s, coconut or Heath chips

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Combine flour, soda and salt; set aside. Combine the rest of the ingredients and mix well. Mix dry and wet ingredients together. Drop by rounded spoonfuls onto ungreased baking sheet. Bake for 10 minute until lightly brown. Cool for one minute on baking sheet and then remove to wire racks to cool completely.

Now we've just got one more question for ya: Got milk?

A childhood favorite so special, it needs a spoon and a straw for consumption - August 6 is National Root Beer Float Day!

The float itself has a couple of potential beginnings. Some say it started in 1874 in Philadelphia when Robert McCay Green used ice cream in his sodas because he’d ran out of cream. Others say he was trying to one up a soda vendor next to him. And still others claim a different person altogether invented the foamy beverage.

While its origin may be a little frothy, its popularity isn’t. Ice cream sodas, or floats, became so beloved with kids that adults decided they needed oversight. In more conservative parts of the country, floats were banned on Sundays and other religious holidays. Some historians believe that this led to soda fountain owners serving ice cream on Sundays, thus giving birth to the sundae.

Most people credit Frank. J. Wisner with inventing the root beer float. Staring out his window one night at Cow Mountain in Colorado, he noticed that the snowy peaks on the dark mountains looked like ice cream in a dark soda. The next day he combined root beer and vanilla ice cream, and the brown cow - as the root beer float is also affectionately known as - was born.

Marshmallows roasting on an open fire - August 10 is National S'mores Day!

This classic campfire sandwich is ooey, gooey and oh-so messy, so pack some extra napkins. Whether you like your marshmallow lightly toasted or charred to oblivion, salute today by chomping into the childhood favorite.

Just because the ingredient list is short and sweet, doesn't mean you can't have some fun: Replace the graham crackers with Oreo cookies, or add sweet potato purée for a riff on autumn's unofficial casserole.

Still in need of s'more ideas? Take a page out of chef, entertainer and food blogger Heather Christo's book, and turn the chocolate-graham-marshmallow combination into cake, cookies, ice cream or brownies.

August 13 National Filet Mignon Day
Wednesday, August 13th

Filet mignon (which translate as "cute" or "dainty" steak) is sure to impress any crowd.

Think of the two long muscles that run down either side of your spine. If you were a cow, those would be your tenderloins. Now, as a cow, the part of the tenderloin closest to your head would be called a filet mignon.

Some American steakhouses serve the middle of the tenderloin as a filet mignon, and while not technically the correct cut of meat, it’s better for presentation because of its roundness.

Because the tenderloin doesn’t carry any of a cow’s weight, it’s very tender. But, that means it doesn’t have a lot of fat, and fat equals flavor. As a result, filets are often wrapped in bacon prior to cooking as that adds flavor and helps protect the delicate cut of meat.

A T-bone, or Porterhouse steak, has the tenderloin down one side and a New York strip down the other. It’s essentially two steaks in one.

The simplest, and arguably best, way to serve a filet mignon is to sear it at high heat after simply seasoning it. As with most cuts of meat, it’s important to let the steak rest before cutting into it.

Filets are often served with sauces to add flavor. A popular option is to serve the steak au poivre style. This classic French preparation involved crusting the filet with coarsely cracked peppercorns and serving it with a cognac based sauce. Heavy cream can be added to the sauce and then reduced.

Pucker up, sweet stuff - August 15 is National Lemon Meringue Pie Day!

Do you meringue?  Whether or not fluffy, toasted egg whites are for you, meringue sure makes for a heavenly topping on this decadent pie.

Since Medieval times, we've had an affinity for lemon pies and custards, but meringue didn't start rearing its pillowy head until the 1600s. Alexander Frehse had the bright idea of combining this tangy-sweet duo into a pie in the nineteenth century.

If you've ever tangled with making a lemon meringue pie, you know that the lemon curd and cornstarch filling can be a fickle feat. The best advice I ever received was from my grandmother: "Keep it simple, honey." She swears by the recipe on the side of the cornstarch box, and if you're ever unsure about the consistency, cook it just a minute longer.

Don't worry, we won't tell if you sweep the meringue to the side and dig out all that rich lemon filling.

Pyros rejoice - August 30 is National Toasted Marshmallow Day!

Build a good old-fashioned campfire in the backyard or gather around an open flame with some skewers and a bag of 'mallows!

Today isn't just for celebrating the soft, chewy and mind-boggling treat that is the marshmallow, but indeed one of the best ways to eat it. If you're the mallow kind, there's nothing better than a golden, toasted marshmallow still warm from the fire. Slightly crispy on the outside and absolutely gooey on the inside, it's a little bit of heaven.

Eat it straight from the stick or slide it on a hunk of chocolate between two graham crackers. You can also indulge in a toasted marshmallow milkshake if you're feeling frisky.

And an even deeper query for the marshmallow connoisseur, do you just barely let it toast or char that sucker until it's black? However you toast, we salute you with our skewers and you're welcome to join the campfire anytime.

You can take this snack on the run, baby - August 31 is National Trail Mix Day.

Even if you're not setting off on a grand adventure today, trail mix is still a great snack to munch on wherever you go - but it gets even better if you're plunging into a hike.

This lightweight snack is packed with powerful carbohydrates and energy, depending on your blend. Grab some granola, dried fruit, nuts and chocolate bits, shake it up and snack it down.

Trail mix has been around a while, but the first literary mention is in Jack Kerouac's "The Dharma Bums," published in 1958. The snack previously flew under the radar and under different names.  The name for trail mix in Germany, Denmark, Poland and Lithuania roughly translates to "student feed."

After all, when Ramen noodles won't do, grab a handful of "student feed" to see you through.
