October 4: National Taco Day
Thursday, October 4th
12:00 AM

  •   It’s National Taco Day! A taco is a traditional Mexican dish made with chicken, beef, vegetables, or seafood. The filling is folded inside a soft or hard tortilla and garnished with toppings such as cheese, salsa, or guacamole.

In 1520, the conquistador Hernando Cortez wrote to King Charles V of Spain to describe his experiences in the New World. In his letter he mentioned a delicious meal the Aztec inhabitants prepared with “tlaxcalli” or “tortilla.” It is the first historical reference to tacos!

Today, tacos are enjoyed all over the world. Invite your friends over for make-your-own tacos and celebrate National Taco Day!

For those who have not had the pleasure of tasting this delightful dish, gumbo is a rich stew usually filled with meat, shellfish, celery, peppers and onions and served over a bed of rice.

A dish that originated out of Louisiana in the 18th century, gumbo has become a staple of New Orleans-esque cuisine and has grown in distinction not just in the southernmost parts of the United States, but the world in general.

It is said that gumbo, much like Louisiana in general, is a savory mix of different ingredien
ts that has introduced and blended a culture as a whole.

There is a strong debate over the true origin of the gumbo dish.

Many believe that the original recipe developed out of different interpretations of traditional West African cuisine, while there are those who believe that gumbo was derived from French cooking ideas and technique.

Regardless of origin of the idea for gumbo, it is a meal to be enjoyed and honored on its national day.

    Happy Caramel Apple Day!

Although Kraft Foods claim their sales representative Dan Walker invented caramel apples in the 1950s -- boosting sales of Kraft caramels, no doubt -- the sweet treat actually dates back to the late 1800s, with the arrival of inexpensive caramel. Once a sought-after Halloween treat, its popularity coinciding with the autumnal harvest, caramel apples have all but disappeared on the trick-or-treat trail, as kids in recent years have been sworn to stick to prepackaged, sealed treats.

Nonetheless, caramel apples remain a Halloween staple, even if they may represent a bygone era. Martha Stewart's Classic Caramel Apple recipe is pretty kid-friendly, or if you'd prefer an adult version, try these directions for a festive Caramel Apple Martini. In sticking to the traditional recipe, the classic Red Delicious apple is often favored, but crisp and tart-flavored types like Granny Smith or McIntosh work well too -- just make sure to avoid overly sweet apples, so can you can aptly capture the proper sweet-tart balance of the dessert.

  •   There's a lot of healthy stuff in such a tiny snack. Nuts contain monounsaturated fat (known as the good kind of fat), fiber, protein, antioxidants and minerals. Research also shows that nuts can help lower your cholesterol and protect your heart.

While technically not all of the nuts that we think about in the culinary sense of the word are true nuts in the botanical sense (peanuts are a type of pea, brazil nuts are actually seeds and walnuts are really drupes, for example), we think that they still deserve celebrating on National Nut Day.

The ride returns to San Rafael with a detour around China Camp State Park along San Pedro Road.
