Friday, August 2nd

Here's a sweet start to National Sandwich Month - August 2 is National Ice Cream Sandwich Day.

With its different textures and temperatures, the ice cream sandwich is a treat that satisfies more than one of the senses.

It’s unclear who we have to thank for this portable dessert, but we’re grateful nonetheless. Depending on where you are in the world, your ice cream sandwich can look very different from what Americans are used to. Some other countries use wafers, cake or even profiteroles instead of cookies for the top and bottom layers.

The beauty of the ice cream sandwich is that it’s very easy to make. If you’re going to bake your own cookies for the treat, make sure they’re bigger and flatter than normal so they don’t break apart. The ice cream to cookie ratio is key as well: too much ice cream, in this instance, will leave you with a mess on your hands.

Ice cream sandwiches can be easily assembled by kids or dressed up by adults. They make for a great interactive dessert after an elaborate dinner. Bake a variety of cookies and have a few different ice creams on hand and guests can practice their sandwich artistry. There’s nothing like feeling like a kid again!

Saturday, August 3rd

Today is National Watermelon Day! Watermelon is a delicious summer fruit that has become a staple at family picnics and cookouts. Did you know that watermelons are 92% water? No wonder they’re so refreshing!

There are around 300 different kinds of watermelon in the U.S. and Mexico. You can find red, pink, white, and yellow varieties in various sizes and shapes. Watermelons are usually quite large, and many county fairs award prizes for the biggest ones. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the heaviest watermelon weighed 262 pounds. To learn more interesting watermelon facts, check out www.watermelon.org.

To celebrate National Watermelon Day, have some watermelon for dessert tonight! Slice it up and eat it plain, cook it on the grill, mix it into a salsa, or blend it into a cocktail. Enjoy!

August 5: National Oyster Day
Monday, August 5th
12:00 AM
Whole Foods Market San Mateo

The world is your oyster - especially seeing that August 5 is National Oyster Day.

So now you’re probably in the mood for some bivalves now right? If you’re a beginner to these mollusks and are wondering how to make the most out of your experience, there are some simple tips:
Bring a buddy: it’s a lot more fun evaluating oysters with a friend or two. Sometimes you’ll taste very different things!
Watch them shuck: oysters look exotic enough, but if you are able to watch the shuckers do their magic at the bar, that’s when it becomes really mesmerizing.
Skip the sauce: don’t be shy about trying the oyster by itself. At restaurants, oysters will always arrive with an entourage of condiments, such as lemon, cocktail sauce, mignonette, or hot sauce. The best way to taste the flavors is by trying it naked (or with nothing on top).
Look closely: examine the shell and the flesh! You’ll soon realize that not all varieties look the same. You can actually tell quite a lot about the oyster based on its appearance.
Chew: don’t just swallow the damn thing! Chew the meat to extract the sweetness and unlock hidden flavor complexities.
Order 3-6 varieties: make sure to sample at least one from each coast; ordering more than 6 varieties at a time might make it confusing to keep track (we ordered 4 types first, followed by another 4).

What are some rituals or rules that you follow while enjoying oysters?

August 10: National Banana Split Day
Saturday, August 10th
12:00 AM

Get on the banana boat bandwagon - August 10 is National Banana Split Day!

Split a 'nanner down the middle, pile on the chocolate, strawberry and vanilla ice cream and don't forget to dig out your hot fudge sauce and pineapple topping! Salute today with a flavor party in your mouth (and a wee bit of brain freeze).

Thanks to a pharmaceutical twentysomething in 1904, the banana split was born out of sheer ice cream creativity. After experimenting with different flavor combos, David Strickler decided adding a banana to the bottom of the dish was just the right touch.

Today is also National S'mores Day, so finish off your ice cream coma with a nice toasty graham-cracker-chocolate-marshmallow mess by the campfire - that is, if your banana split isn't quite enough and leaves you wanting s'more.

August 13: National Filet Mignon Day
Tuesday, August 13th
12:00 AM
Whole Foods Market San Mateo

Filet mignon (which translate as "cute" or "dainty" steak) is sure to impress any crowd.

Think of the two long muscles that run down either side of your spine. If you were a cow, those would be your tenderloins. Now, as a cow, the part of the tenderloin closest to your head would be called a filet mignon.

Some American steakhouses serve the middle of the tenderloin as a filet mignon, and while not technically the correct cut of meat, it’s better for presentation because of its roundness.

Because the tenderloin doesn’t carry any of a cow’s weight, it’s very tender. But, that means it doesn’t have a lot of fat, and fat equals flavor. As a result, filets are often wrapped in bacon prior to cooking as that adds flavor and helps protect the delicate cut of meat.

A T-bone, or Porterhouse steak, has the tenderloin down one side and a New York strip down the other. It’s essentially two steaks in one.

The simplest, and arguably best, way to serve a filet mignon is to sear it at high heat after simply seasoning it. As with most cuts of meat, it’s important to let the steak rest before cutting into it.

Filets are often served with sauces to add flavor. A popular option is to serve the steak au poivre style. This classic French preparation involved crusting the filet with coarsely cracked peppercorns and serving it with a cognac based sauce. Heavy cream can be added to the sauce and then reduced.

Friday, August 16th

Today is Bratwurst Day! Bratwurst is a heavily spiced sausage, usually enjoyed on a roll with mustard or by itself with a side of sauerkraut. The term “bratwurst” is a compound of two German words—“braten,” which means “to fry” and “wurst,” which means “sausage.”

Bratwursts originated in Germany and have been around since the 14th century. These sausages are generally made from pork, veal, or beef. Truly dedicated fans can attend the annual Bucyrus Bratwurst Festival in Ohio to celebrate this historical dish.

Today, grab a “brat” in honor of Bratwurst Day. Don’t forget to wash it down with some beer!

Chaat started in part of Uttar Pradesh in India, but now you'll find this street food all over the world, sometimes with delicious influences from other cultures.  It's kind of the fast food of India.

Our chaat is served smothered in tamarind and cilantro chutneys, yogurt and sweet and sour garbanzo beans.  It's topped off with fresh cilantro, red onions, and tomatoes.

So, if you are Hot To Chaat then stop by The Kitchen from 11am til 2pm Monday through Friday!

August 27: National Pots de Crème Day

Ready for your French lesson? August 27 is National Pot de Crème Day!

Let’s start with pronunciation. Try saying it like this: Poh-deh-krem.

A definition would probably help too. Pot de crème translates to "pot of cream." It’s a very creamy dessert that’s essentially an egg heavy, loose custard that’s baked in a cup. That’s where the pots - or ramekins - come in. They’re typically small, and were originally made from porcelain. Some even came with cute little lids and tiny spoons.

The secret to a good pot de crème is in the method. In most recipes you’ll see this kind of egg to liquid ratio: one whole egg to every five egg yolks for every 2 1/2 to 3 cups of liquid. The custard is made by heating milk or heavy cream with flavoring. Typically pots de crème are vanilla, though chocolate is very popular too.

The eggs are whisked separately until very smooth and voluminous. The hot liquid mixture is then tempered into the egg mixture so you don’t end up with scrambled eggs. After that, the whole thing needs to be strained through a sieve.

Once the base mixture is done, it’s poured into three-ounce ramekins or little pots which are then placed in a larger baking dish. Add hot water to the baking dish until it reaches halfway up the sides of the pots. This is called a water bath and prevents the eggs from getting rubbery. Also, it helps if the baking dish is covered so a skin doesn’t form on top of the custard.

While this might not sound like the easiest dessert to whip up on a whim, it sure does satisfy. The custard is creamy and velvety, and well worth the effort.

August 30: National Toasted Marshmallow Day
Friday, August 30th

Fall is just around the corner, and with it comes cooler weather. Don’t be disheartened by the dropping temperatures; instead, light the hearth, stoke the outdoor fire pit or wait a while before putting the grill in the garage. Toasted marshmallows are the ultimate way to usher in the cooler season.

Marshmallows have a pretty interesting history. The althea officinalis, or marshmallow plant, was initially used for its healing properties (Althainein in Greek means "to heal"). The root of this native African plant also produces a sticky white substance which the Egyptians combined with honey to make candy.

Not surprisingly, in the mid-19th century, the French turned the treat into the fluffy puff we know today as a marshmallow. They combined egg whites, water, sugar and the marshmallow root and then molded the mixture into individual candies. They were also dusted with corn starch to prevent them from sticking to everything. Over time, the marshmallow root has been replaced with gelatin, but the basic homemade recipe remains the same.

Marshmallows are pretty easy to make, but you will need a candy thermometer and an electric mixer or beater. You can use them in all sorts of ways: in cocoa, for puffed rice treats or for dipping in chocolate or caramel.

Toasted marshmallows are probably best known for their starring roles in sweet potato casserole (a Southern staple at Thanksgiving) and s’mores. The technique you use for toasting is very personal. Some prefer the rotisserie method, gently turning their mallow until it’s evenly browned. Others jump right in and engulf the puff in flames. Whatever your preferred technique, there’s something very satisfying about enjoying this treat outdoors before the cold really sets in.

August 31: Eat Outside Day
Saturday, August 31st
12:00 AM
Whole Foods Market San Mateo

It's Eat Outside Day! Today is the last day of August, which makes this a very timely celebration. It's the perfect opportunity to take your breakfast, lunch, or dinner into the great outdoors and enjoy the last few days of warm summer weather.

Al-fresco dining first became popular in the 18th century. Patrons who enjoyed eating their meals in the open air could visit tea gardens, seashore resorts, or rooftop restaurants. Eating outside was considered a tourist activity up until the early 1900s. Around that time, the first sidewalk cafés appeared on the streets of Manhattan.

There are many ways that you can participate in Eat Outside Day. Eat at your favorite outdoor restaurant, enjoy a popsicle on your porch, organize a barbeque in your backyard, or have a picnic at a local park. Whatever you decide to do, just be sure to enjoy some time outside. Have fun!
