October 1 - World Vegetarian Day

Today is World Vegetarian Day! Organized by the North American Vegetarian Society (NAVS), World Vegetarian Day promotes awareness about the proven benefits of vegetarianism. Each year about one million people become vegetarians in the United States.

People choose to become vegetarians for many different reasons. Common motivations are ethical concerns, health concerns, and environmental concerns. Not eating meat saves animals from gruesome factory-farm conditions; reduces the risk of heart disease, stroke, and cancer; and mitigates the environmental pollution of animal agriculture.

Join other vegetarians today at parties, potlucks, and food tastings in honor of World Vegetarian Day!

October 6 - National Noodle Day

Give it a twirl - October 6 is National Noodle Day!

We're just crazy for the oodles of noodles to be slurped down all across the world. Whether you like to twist long ribbons around your fork, slip strips into soup, dish out bow-ties and spirals, or layer sheets with all kinds of savory delights, today is all about canoodling with noodles.

Noodles have been a comforting go-to meal for a long, long time. The earliest mention of the noodle is from Horace's writings in the first century BC, while Chinese scholars claimed to have found the oldest noodles in the world at the ripe age of 4,000. The word itself comes from the German "nudel," which is well, self-explanatory.

While noodles can be made from virtually any kind of dough - wheat, rice, potato, maize, nut, buckwheat - it's all in how you like to slurp them down. Traditionally, you've got to boil them in water or broth to bring the texture back to life. From there, you can serve them drenched in sauce, chilled in a salad, stir-fried in oil or tossed in with your favorite casserole.

So how do you get your noodle on? Is Mom's special casserole still your it's-been-that-kind-of-day comfort or are you a pasta and marinara sauce purist? Does ramen straight-up still get you through? Let us know! And don't worry, we won't tell if you were the kid eating all of the dried noodles in art class.

October 4 - National Taco Day

Taco 'bout a great day - October 4 is National Taco Day!

Flour or corn tortilla, meat or no meat, with guacamole or without - tacos provide an endless list of flavor combinations. This popular street food has made its way from Mexico to homes and restaurants the world over.

According to Jeffrey Pilcher, history professor and author of Planet Taco: A Global History of Mexican Food, the word "taco" likely originated from silver mines in 18th century Mexico. Miners would use little charges, or explosives, to break up the ore they were mining. They’d wrap pieces of paper around gunpowder for the job. Because of the wrap's resemblance, the taco took the name. (Gives new meaning to hot sauce!)

Tacos have had a bit of an international facelift since their humble beginnings. The hard taco shell is actually an American invention, as is the taco bowl. Gourmet taquerias are also popping up here, there and everywhere, with lobster and Wagyu beef tacos appearing as regular menu items. Korean barbecue tacos are wildly popular on the West Coast, and instead of pico de gallo, you might find be offered kimchi.

With all the possibilities for delicious tacos, what’s your favorite?

October 18 - National Chocolate Cupcake Day

Cupcakes are all the rage at the moment, and have been for the past few years. October 18, aka National Chocolate Cupcake Day, is the day to celebrate the cocoa-kissed variety.

Here are some tips to jazz up the bake sale favorite:

- If you’re adding nuts, candy or flavored chips, dust them in flour before adding them to the batter so they don’t all sink to the bottom of the batter.

- Try using unusual flavorings: Sea salt sprinkled over the top, or cayenne pepper added to the batter.

- Try stuffing a small candy in the center of the cupcake half way through cooking – you’ll have a melted surprised waiting when you bite into the cupcake.

- The sky is the limit with frosting - literally and figuratively. Frosting is no longer limited to chocolate and vanilla: Try using savory ingredients like bacon, or fruity like orange or raspberry. These days it’s popular to have frosting piped as high as the cupcake itself.

October 22 - National Nut Day

In case you missed out on National Grab Some Nuts Day back in August, lucky for you, October 22 is National Nut Day.

Most nut trees grow in warm environments, and a lot of nuts are native to the Southern Hemisphere. Here are five fun nut facts from the Australian tree nut industry group, "Nuts for Life":

- Ever wondered why you can’t find cashews sold in the shell? That’s because part of the shell contains urushiol, the same poison found in poison ivy.

- The first mention of hazelnuts can be dated back to a Chinese manuscript from 2838 BC.

- Brazil nuts are actually the seed of a very large tree found in the Amazon jungle, hence the name.

- Pistachios are the only (edible) nut that don’t need to be shelled before you roast them.

- Bitter almonds contain hydrogen cyanide. Luckily, the type of almonds consumed commercially isn't the bitter variety.

National Chocolate Day

Five Food Finds about Chocolate

  1. Chocolate comes from the Aztec word “xocolatl” which means “bitter water”.
  2. Switzerland is one of the top countries for chocolate consumption. The Swiss consume about 22 lbs of chocolate, per person, per year.
  3. Cocoa beans were used as currency by the Mayan and Aztec cultures. Perhaps this is where they saying “Money grows on trees” came from.
  4. Allowing chocolate to melt in your mouth produces the same or even stronger reactions as passionately kissing.
  5. Most cocoa comes from West Africa.

Indian Street Food...its so chaat right now!

There's something we'd love for you to try.  The Kitchen at San Mateo has teamed up with Sukhi's Indian food for a new pop-up style street food offering in our store featuring chaat.

What's 'Chaat', you ask?

Chaat started in part of Uttar Pradesh in India, but now you'll find this street food all over the world, sometimes with delicious influences from other cultures.  It's kind of the fast food of India.

Our chaat is served smothered in tamarind and cilantro chutneys, yogurt and sweet and sour garbanzo beans.  It's topped off with fresh cilantro, red onions, and tomatoes.

So, if you are Hot To Chaat then stop by The Kitchen from 11am til 2pm Monday through Friday!

October 31 - National Caramel Apple Day

Does an apple a day still keep the doctor away if it’s covered in candy? October 31 is National Candy Apple Day!

With all the candy we’ll be eating this week, it’s nice to know there’s a way to at least help round out your diet by working some fruit in. Candy apples were supposedly invented by Newark, New Jersey, native William W. Kolb in 1908. Initially, the apples were window decorations, but they sold so well he kept on making them.

Candy apples are different from caramel apples, which use a dairy product in the sauce. Candy apples use candy that’s in its hard crack stage, which means you’ve melted sugar to between 300 and 310 degrees Fahrenheit.

The candy surrounding the apple can be flavored many ways - the ones Kolb made were cinnamon-flavored. As for the apple itself, most apple enthusiasts recommend using the Granny Smith variety as the tartness of the apple will be balanced by the sugary sweet candy.
