Planting Trees with Kids, Volunteers, and Whole Foods Market!
Wednesday, September 11th
9:00 AM - 1:00 PM
Knox Parks - 75 Ridgefield Street, Hartford, CT, Volunteer

Calling all kids, families and volunteers! Join us Wednesday, September 11, as we honor life and celebrate our community by planting trees! The Whole Foods Market at Bishops Corner, the Whole Foods Market Center store (Blue Black Square) in West Hartford, along with Whole Foods Market in Glastonbury invite you to join us for a fun, fall volunteer event. From 9am to 1pm, we’re planting 33 trees on Canterbury Street in Hartford. It’s a big job and we're excited to roll up our sleeves to help with this project, along with our partners at KNOX Park Foundation and The Hartford. This will be a family-friendly project with tasks for every age, encouraging children to give back to their community!

And we won’t let volunteers go hungry! Whole Foods Market will have a jam packed build-your-own salad-bar for lunch, plus all the fixings, in honor of the Whole Kids Foundation.

It's our goal to make your experience fun, uplifting, and kid-friendly. This is an opportunity for our community to partner together.

WHERE TO PARK AND MEET UP:

*Park at the Keney Park parking lot at the Ridgefield Street entrance.  The staging area and meeting spot is Temple Shannon’s house at 75 Ridgefield St-corner of Westbourne Parkway/Ridgefield St.

SUPPLIES TO BRING IF YOU HAVE THEM:

(make sure they are clearly marked, otherwise they might get taken accidentally)

* Extra gardening gloves
* Extra shovels
* Extra buckets
* Wheelbarrow

WHAT TO WEAR:
* Jeans
* Old t-shirt
* Heavy boots, sensible shoes (NO FLIP FLOPS!)
* Sunscreen, Bug Repellant
* Hat
* Sunglasses

VOLUNTEER SLIPS:

* We ask that each volunteer sign a volunteer slip for themselves, and any children, so that we can all stay safe. That form will be available at the event or can be emailed to you at your request.

Where can I contact the organizer with any questions?

Please email Lorri.Foster@wholefoods.com

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

No ticket needed. We’re just trying to get a head count of volunteers before the event itself to provide enough food for everyone!

Join us for our Goodwill at the Grill, benefitting Hartford/Ocotal Sister City Project! September 27, Grab a Burger (Beef or Veggie), Chips and drink for a $5 donation!

The Hartford/Ocotal Sister City Project is a story of two cities reaching out to each other, one in Nicaragua, Central America, the other Connecticut in the United States. It begins in 1986 when the Hartford Ocotal Sister City Project(HOSCP) was established with the help of the Capitol Region Conference of Churches and moves forward again in 1995 when the Project began providing seed money for a micro-lending program called FUNAFAM, which is based on the Grameen Bank model. Financial support from this program has helped hundreds of Ocotal women start small businesses of their own.

Over a period of 25 years HOSCP has used contributions to help fund the following programs, evolving from direct material aid to self-help initiatives:

◾Material aid shipments in conjunction with the New Haven-Leon SCP

◾Educational events

◾Helping to fund the purchase of an ambulance

◾Helping to fund the clean water project

◾Hurricane Mitch relief

◾FUNAFAM, a microcredit program based on the Grameen Bank model. Loaning small amounts of money to individuals starting small businesses

◾Health education programs in outlying areas surrounding Ocotal

Many of the founders of the HOSCP are still active in the work.

The sister-city commitment does not go out of fashion, nor does it cease to inspire those involved.
