Global Vice President of Quality Standards and Public Affairs

With over 30 years of experience in the natural and organic foods industry, Margaret Wittenberg focuses on quality standards development,  food and nutrition education, and corporate communications with special emphasis on seafood sustainability, farm animal welfare, agricultural genetic engineering, and sustainable and organic agriculture.  Margaret is one of the Company’s original team members, joining Whole Foods Market in 1981, and has worked closely with key domestic and international organizations including the USDA, the EPA, Organic Trade Association, and the Marine Stewardship Council. She played an integral role in the creation of the National Organic Standards, including a five-year term as the sole retail representative on the USDA’s National Organic Standards Board. She was honored by the National Audubon Society with a prestigious Rachel Carson Award for her 30+ years of work championing organic agriculture, sustainability and the environment. She has also authored several books on the topics of food and nutrition, her latest being “New Good Food” and “New Good Food Shopper’s Pocket Guide,” published by Ten Speed Press.
