Walter Robb,co-CEO, shares our Revised Team Member Language Guidelines on behalf of the Whole Foods Market Leadership Network. I'd like to begin this post with two statements regarding the recent incident involving two of our team members in one of our Albuquerque, New Mexico stores. First, we sincerely apologize that a section of our handbook regarding team member interactions in the workplace was not clearly written, and for any misunderstandings or offense it has created. Its intention was to foster inclusion, not exclusion.

Whole Foods Market supported California’s Proposition 37 because we believe consumers have the fundamental right to know how their food is sourced, grown and produced. We are disappointed that the initiative did not pass. We do believe that awareness of this issue was significantly raised during the campaign, and we are encouraged by the labeling efforts now underway in many other states. We hope that ultimately these efforts will lead to a single federal labeling standard.

I've been in the grocery business for more than 30 years. Since I opened my first store in Weaverville, California in 1977, I've talked to customers about everything from diet choices to recipes to organic gardening. Over that time I've had the opportunity to see firsthand what Whole Foods Market customers want is information about the food they're buying.

This past week, our $10 for a $20 gift card offer on Living Social received tremendous publicity for being the first-ever national grocery deal and for selling out in record time. Indeed, the offer sold at an average rate of 30 sales per second and reached as high as 80 sales per second at its peak — on the way to selling out one million coupons in about 10 hours.
