This past Tuesday, Dr. Oz reopened the debate on genetically modified foods. His show about GMOs last October sparked a firestorm after he expressed his firm position on mandatory labeling for GMO foods. Whole Foods Market’s action to support customer’s right to know by requiring GMO labeling in our stores inspired Dr. Oz to address the GMO issue again.
Watch all three parts to hear Dr. Oz explain what GMOs are, how they may affect your health, why he believes labeling in crucial and how to avoid GMOs in the foods you buy. You’ll also hear our own Co-CEO Walter Robb explain why we are taking action and how we are supporting our partners through this rigorous process.
Here’s a bit of what you’ll hear in the videos:
Dr. Oz: We talked about genetically modified foods on the show before and you’re taking unprecedented action as a head of one of the largest food chains in the country to force your suppliers to label every single genetically modified product that comes into your stores.
Walter Robb: Simply put, I think our customer has a right to know what’s in their food. It’s fundamental. I think our company’s responsibility to be more transparent in bringing those products to the marketplace, working together with suppliers, not force them, do it together with our suppliers is really important. We have been in support of mandatory labeling since 1992. This issue really has not gotten any traction over all of these years. Now the lack of mandatory labeling in the United States and prevalence of GMOs in the food supply make it increasingly difficult for retailers such as ourselves to offer these choices to our customers and for customers to find them.
