My mother was a big fan of packing string cheese in our lunches and as snack for car trips. We three kids were big fans of playing with the string cheese and then eating it. It was a win-win for all parties. We ate a serving of cheese and got to play with our food. It’s no wonder that 25 years later, I serve string cheese to my toddler who plays with and then eats, just like I did.
Sticking to the Facts
What exactly is string cheese? Mozzarella cheese forms strings from being repeatedly stretched and pulled during processing. These strings are individually packaged and ready to enjoy. Other cheeses (Colby, Cheddar, etc) don’t actually make strings, so in this form they’re called cheese sticks or stick cheese.
String cheese may not be the big cheese or the king of cheeses, but as nearly any kid and lots of adults will tell you, it’s earned a place in their hearts…and their lunches. What’s so appealing about string cheese and cheese sticks?
- They’re easy to pack and grab on the go (no cutting or slicing needed – hurrah!)
- As individually wrapped 1-ounce sticks, it’s built-in portion control (1 stick = 1 serving of cheese)
- They deliver calcium and protein
- They’re fun to eat and make it totally acceptable to play with your food
- “Light” versions are available that contain fewer calories and fat
