Join the Whole Foods Market Wilcrest team members in their initiative to beautify a community garden in the Sunnyside neighborhood. To participate, please sign up here. The garden is thriving and produces food for the neighboring homes.
A few jobs you can expect are:
- clear pathways
- weeding garden beds
- secure fencing
- planting herbs
There are about 27,000 Sunnyside residents spanning 7.3 square miles. Healthy options are limited due to the 33 fast food restaurants in the area. The population is serviced by one grocery store which charges on average 35% more than other grocery stores for produce and about 30% more for diapers and formula. The average annual income for a family in Sunnyside is $17,000 a year.
There are 30 families that participate in the upkeep of the garden. About 350 pounds of food is harvested a month. Each gardener "owns" what is grown in his/her bed. Urban Harvest also offers free classes in the garden every Thursday. Those classes are free and open to anyone interested in learning about organic, seasonal planting.
Each member of the garden is required to spend two hours a month maintaining the community beds, pathways and fruit trees.
OTHER PROGRAMS FROM URBAN HARVEST IN THE COMMUNITY:
Urban Harvest currently programs in 4 schools in the Sunnyside area including outdoor classrooms teaching math, science and nutrition.
