Welcome to our Salud Cooking School!

Your Host!  Chef Joy

Joy is a graduate of New York Restaurant School, HB Actors Studio and has been passionate performer and cook since the age of thirteen...  She comes to us from the Big Apple (New York City) where she ran her own children's theater company for over fifteen years, performing at over 200 schools, libraries and museums each year. Because her true passion has always been food, each summer, Joy stayed busy working for high end catering companies and fast paced restaurants!  Learning new tricks and recipes with each job, she has combined her passions into a fabulous repertoire that speaks to all ages and interests.  Among many accomplishments; Joy has made 500 sandwiches in 3 hours, managed a café for toddlers, been a featured chef at Microsoft parties and ran the catering for NYU's accelerated MBA program.  Joy worked on NBC's Saturday Night Live and is a published food writer and photographer.  Her favorite review comes from Brian Larkin, Age 8:  "No wonder they call you Joy, you make everybody happy."

    9-10am in Salud! FREE

    Drop in and enjoy coffee like a pro.  Just like our wine tasting, a Different Roaster and Beans will be featured each week. You'll be sniffing, slurping, swallowing and learning how to evaluate coffee's fragrance, aroma, taste, nose, aftertaste and body.  Say "Good morning!" with us every Sunday this fall!

    7 to 8:30pm in Salud! $15

    The Specialty Department is taking over Thursdays with classes devoted to Wine and Cheese.  We have cheese and wine experts that work at this beautiful store and we want you to be able to talk to them and learn about the amazing world of artisanal cheeses and wines in a casual environment!  Do not miss out on this series, the knowledge will stay with you forever!

  • Every First Tuesday

    Singles Happy Hour

    5:30-7:00pm in Salud! $1

    Once a month Salud! is the spot for singles.  For just $1 you get a 2 ounce wine tasting and gourmet nibbles.  Bring a friend and meet a new friend.   Each week, Chef Joy will entice you to try a new taste, a different ingredient or demonstrate a quick cooking technique. Bring a few singles and a few singles$ for a happy hour.

    New to America: Exploring our Holiday Foods

    6 to 8pm in Salud! $25

    One Thanksgiving I, Chef Joy, taught a Korean exchange student how to make mashed potatoes.  She thought it was the strangest thing.  She taught me back a Korean BBQ Sauce that I use to this day.  That started me on a food exchange journey that I'd like to bring to Salud!  We'll also add in some American culture and discuss how and why our traditional foods got started.   If I teach you, will you teach me?  Great class for beginning American cooks too.  On the Menu with Wine Pairings:

    • Roasted Turkey with Pecan Cornbread Stuffing and Pan Gravy
    • Cranberry Orange Sauce
    • Roasted Acorn Squash with Cinnamon Butter
    • My Mom's Mashed Potatoes
    • Green Beans with Bacon

    Taste of Thanksgiving

    5-8pm $10 donation to Figgy Pudding

    Want to sample the finest every department has to offer for the holiday season? Ever wondered what the prepared foods Thanksgiving meal tastes like? What wines go with a great holiday meal? Donate $10 to the famous Figgy Pudding Brigade and join this highly anticipated annual event!

    On the menu:

     • Prepared Food’s Holiday meal, including the vegan option

    A Small Thanksgiving

    6-8pm in Salud! $35

    It's just the two of us... we can't eat a 20 pound turkey!  Or maybe you just want a night alone with someone special before the family event.  An easy elegant holiday dinner designed for 2 to 4 people.  No leftovers, no hours in the kitchen.  Relax, sip some wine.  Life is good.  On the Menu:

    • Sauté Scallops with Winter Greens and Caramelized Onions
    • Poussin with Grapes and Cognac
    • Wheat berry Pilaf
    • Zabaglione and Strawberries

    Meat Feast with Mark Neumann

    6-8pm in Salud! $40

    Boy-o- Boy... Meat-o-Meat... Mark-o-Mark... Chef Joy just can't wait to teach this class with Mark Neumann, Associate Team Leader from the Meat Department.  Rack of Lamb, Crown Roast of Pork and a Beef Rib Roast all in one night!  Can it be done?  Mark says yes!  He's ready to teach you how to prepare these meaty showstoppers. Chef Joy will provide side dishes and wine pairings.   Sign up early, Mark has a fan club that might beat you to a seat.

    Date Night: Picnic in Front of the Fireplace

    6-8pm in Salud! $35

    Get away from the holiday to-dos and must-dos.  Enjoy a frenzy-free night with your best friend in front of a crackling fire.  Tonight we'll set the scene and serve up cozy food that's easy to eat while lounging on pillows.  The fire department might prevent us from burning wood in Salud! but our warm hearts will provide the right sparks.  On the menu with wine pairings:

    • Black Grape Focaccia with Prosciutto and Mascarpone
    • Roasted Salmon with Hazelnut Crust and Sundried Tomato Salsa
    • Pesto Cheesecake
    • Vanilla Toffee Fondue

    KID'S Cookie Cooking Morning

    9-12noon - All ages - Drop in (5 and under, adult supervision) Free

    Drop in and help Chef Joy make some drop cookies.  Decorate a gingerbread man.  Sprinkle sugar glitter on a snowflake, and, best of all, eat up or take home your creations.   This morning we are all Cookie Monsters, Me want cookie!

    Merry Make Ahead Dinner

    You're done before the first guest arrives!  You get to enjoy your own party!  Do-aheads make it do-able.  Learn tips and tricks to keep your party effortless and festive.  A winter menu worth celebrating, with wine pairings:

    • Old Bay Shrimp with Three Sauces
    • Corn Cakes with Wild Greens and Maple Vinaigrette
    • French Cassoulet with Spiced Grape Chutney
    • Chocolate Hazelnut Lava Cakes

    New Year's Eve Early

    4 to 6pm in Salud! Note early time $40

    Four o'clock PM in Seattle is 12 midnight in Greenwich, London (local time on the zero line of longitude).  Why wait to Celebrate?  Why put up with ruckus crowds and unsafe drivers?  We'll hoist our glasses and bring in the New Year with the British. You'll be ahead of the game for the rest of the year.  On the Menu, with Champagne:

    • Zen Palate Moo-Shu Basil Rolls with Ginger Plum Sauce
    • Smoked Salmon with Apple Fritters, fried Chickpeas and Sage
    • Beef Croustades with Boursin and Mushroom Duxelles
    • Frozen Grand Marnier Soufflés

    Good Luck Foods for the New Year

    5 to 7pm in Salud! Note Early Time $35

    Around the world, people eat certain foods that are thought to symbolize luck in the New Year. Tonight we'll explore some of these traditions and end the evening lucky and well fed. Asian Long Noodles, Southern Black Eyed Peas and Collard Greens, Kielbasa
    Cabbage Soup and Round Ring Cake with Hidden Surprises are a few of the treats we'll sample.  Chef Joy promises this will be a fun foodie class with good eats and nice wine.

    • Chickpea and Walnut Falafel with Tzatziki Topping
    • Chicken Fingers with Wheat Germ Crust and Orange Curry Sauce

    "Beauty foods" have been a hot topic from the time of Cleopatra! Today, everyone from Oprah to Dr. Weil are promoting foods and supplements that help strengthen hair and nails, promote clear beautiful skin, and sharpen the mind.  Tonight let's have some fun exploring the tastes that make the difference.  We'll eat some good food, learn new recipes and have a relaxing Friday night.  On the Menu:

    • French Lentil Soup with Zucchini Walnut Raita
    • Blueberry Corn Salad with Pine Nut & Chorizo
    • 40 Cloves of Garlic Slow Cooked Chicken, Brown Rice & Avacados
    • Live Forever or Death by Chocolate Cake

    I Hate to Cook But I Love To Eat

    There's nothing like a gourmet home-cooked meal.  It's something to be enjoyed and lingered over with a good bottle of wine.  But spend all day preparing it?  No thanks!  This is a class that gets you out of the kitchen fast but still lets you enjoy a full flavored dining experience.  A great class for beginning cooks too!  On the Menu:

    • Shrimp Curry in a Hurry with Coconut Cakes
    • Lemon Sesame Chicken with Vegetable Pasta
    • Warm Spinach and Sausage Salad
    • Creamsycle Mousse

    An Excellent Seafood Adventure: Tex Mex Seafood

    6-8pm in Salud! $35

    Yahoo!  The Seafood Banditos are coming to Salud! We've got some new blood over in the Seafood Department, have you heard a Texas twang over the counter?  Tonight we explore Seafood with salsas, Seafood wrapped taco style and Seafood sizzled with hot chilies.  Chef Joy will provide extra fixings and pour the Beer and Sangria.   Grab your reservations early, we always sell out.

    Wine Time: Australia and New Zealand

    7 to 8:30pm in Salud! Note Time! $20

    He's Back!!!  Yippee!  Matthew McKinnon, our Whole Foods wine guru, takes you to Australia and New Zealand tonight.  Don't be shy, this is a great class for beginners.  It's a valuable class for advanced oenophiles too!  Matthew's laid back yet sophisticated style will guide you through a blind tasting then encourage you to discover food pairings for each wine.  Must pre-register.  A light bite night, not a full meal.  All Fall Wine Classes Sold Out, register soon.

    Easy Indian Cooking -- Vegetarian

    6 to 8pm in Salud! $25

    Bring the flavors of India home to your table after taking tonight's class.  This exotic cuisine can be quick, accessible and enjoyable.  Good class for beginning Indian cooking.  This is an all vegetarian night where you won't miss the meat.  We'll show you how to pair wine with these bold flavors too.  On the menu:

    • Curried Lentil Soup with Ginger Tomato Salad
    • Savory Coconut Cakes with Apple Almond Raita

    It's Spanish. It's irresistible, mouthfuls of tasty miniature morsels. It's Tapas tonight! Bring someone who is a laugher, a lover of life! Eating Tapas goes hand in hand with friendship and lots of great conversation. Chef Joy is bringing Matthew McKinnon, our Whole Foods wine wiz, to the party. Matthew has lived in Spain and will bring some stories and delicious Spanish wines to the party. Lot's of little bites include:

    East Meets West: Cooking with Asian Ingredients

    6 to 8pm in Salud! $35

    Lemon Grass, Bok Choy, Daikon Radish.... they look exotic.  How often do you buy and cook with Asian Produce and Groceries?  Fish Sauce, Thai Red Curry, Won Ton Wrappers, Soba Noodles... it's time to put these great tastes on your shopping list.  Tonight's Pan-Asian cuisine will give you confidence to play with new tastes.  How to match wines with Asian food and a Sake tasting too.  On the Menu:

    • Vietnamese Garden Rolls with Crab & Lime Chili Sauce
    • Warm Soba Noodle Bowl with Shiitake and Dashi
    • Coconut Hamburgers with Cucumber Raita
    • Tofu and Red Curry Stew

To Register for a Class
Please contact Customer Service at 425.462.1400 ext. 0 and ask to register for a class in Salud! or click on the register now link which will direct you to acteva.com, our online sign-up service.  Register Now!

Sold Out Classes
To be added to the waiting list for a sold out class, call 425.462.1400 ext. 0 and specify the class, date and number of students to be added to the waiting list.

Cancellations
To cancel a class please contact Customer Service at 425.462.1400 ext. 0. Seven days notice is appreciated, but a full refund will be credited if you cancel within 48 hours prior to the day of the class. Any cancellations within 24 hours of the class or faxed into the store will not be honored.

If a class has an insufficient number of participants, it will be canceled 24 hours prior to the start of the class. Salud! Coordinator will contact you by phone regarding the cancellation. You will receive a full credit or refund for the class.

All classes are demonstration style unless noted "hands-on". Demonstration classes are limited to 14 registered students and "Sunday Family Dinners" are also limited to 14.
