Community Giving Navel Oranges

What makes a ripe orange taste even jucier? Why, the donation of 5 cents per bag going to support AmeriCares' relief efforts in Haiti. In working with the orange supplier, Paramount Citrus, we are offering this 4 lb bag of Navel Oranges for $3.99 with a portion of the sale supporting AmeriCares, now through the end of February. Nickels for Nonprofits
Use a reusable shopping bag each time you check out, and by going a little greener, you can help share a little green with community organizations in need! The 5-cent refund you receive for each reusable bag you bring in can be applied toward your purchase, or given back to the community with a donation to one of two featured non-profit organizations. Customers who choose the donation option will receive a wooden nickel for each reusable bag which they can deposit it into one of the two slots available on the wooden holder at Customer Service. Thanks to our green-minded shoppers, over $1,175 in nickels was awared to our August/September/October community partners, PAWS Ohio and the Nature Center at Shaker Lakes!
Our two current non-profit community partners are Western Reserve Land Conservancy (seeking to preserve the scenic beauty, rural character and natural resources of northern Ohio) and Whole Planet Foundation (creating economic partnerships through microcredit with the poor in communities that supply our stores with products, with a focus on the developing world).

Get a head start on your weekend with a little GROWN-UP playtime... For discriminating and casual appreciators alike, Five By Seven (sponsored by Cleveland Magazine) features five food and drink pairings at five exclusive sampling stations, with live music and a new and different theme every week - for over a year! From meat and seafood to prepared foods and specialty cheese, you will discover new tastes and new trends that tantalize your pallet. Your $5 cover grants you an all-access punch card listing the evening's pairings (including wine and beer, and non-alcoholic options), as well as a free reusable wine glass which you can bring back for a $1 discount off admission on a later date! (Note: There is always a selection of vegetarian and non-vegetarian food samples.) Come taste what all the buzz is about - join us every Friday for this tasty and fun Whole Foods Market social ritual.

February 19th: "Whole Planet Foundation" A special menu inspired by Whole Trade and fair-trade products including those sourced from the developing world. 100% of tonight's event proceeds will be donated to the Whole Planet Foundation. Music by Vic Samalot (guitar).
February 26th: "Black Heritage Recipes" Tonight we toast Black History Month with a menu tribute to a history of inspired culinary traditions. Music by Vince Robinson (keyboard/jazz).
In keeping with the spontaneous spirit of this event, the complete menu is a surprise to those who attend - we will not divulge the menu prior to 5pm each Friday. No phone calls, please.

Film Screening: "Food Beware" at the Cleveland Museum of Art

The French know food. In the documentary Food Beware, the mayor of a small French village resolves to make the school's lunch menu organic as a response to growing concerns over the use of pesticides and other agribusiness practices. Incorporating the testimony of farmers, politicians, health-care workers, and parents, the film explores the notion that our food may be responsible for a general rise in cancer rates, infertility, and other health problems. See the film at the museum, then come for an informal lunchtime discussion tomorrow at the store! *Regular admission $8. 5% Day benefitting Heights Arts

Whole Foods Market is teaming up with Heights Arts to promote a community rich in arts and recreation year round. From food and groceries to dining, beer and wine, 5% of today's net sales will be donated to Heights Arts, and customers can help simply by showing up to shop! Plus, join us for a series of arty programs scheduled at the store throughout the day, offering a "taste" of the flavor of what Heights Arts inspires in our community. Free arty activities in the Café during the day will include:
- 11am-1pm: Create elements for Fencepiration with Debbie Apple Presser
- 5 pm: Chamber music performed by Charles Bernard, Sonja Braaten, Sae Shiragami, and Isabel Trautwein from the Cleveland Orchestra
- 6pm: South Euclid Mayor Georgine Welo and officials from the City of South Euclid will be at Whole Foods to officially launch Fencepiration. Those in attendance will enjoy complimentary canned beverages which - after rinsing - will be integrated into the piece!
- 6-8 pm: Create elements for Fencepiration with Debbie Apple Presser
- 7 pm: Cleveland Heights Poet Laureate Gail Bellamy reads poems about food
- Shoppers will also be greeted by Food Haiku sprinkled about the store and painted heart pins offered by students at Boulevard Elementary School to support Red Cross relief efforts in Haiti .
This 5% Day will also launch Fencepiration, a Heights Arts temporary public art project in partnership with Whole Foods, The Coral Company, and The City of South Euclid. Artists Carol Hummel and Debbie Apple Presser will engage community members in transforming a utilitarian construction fence on Cedar Road into a visually stimulating, inspiring, and attractive streetscape element during the construction process for the north side of Cedar Center. Fencepiration will create dynamic art using only recycled materials (and re-recycle them upon completion). A prototype will be on display during 5% Day.

The University Heights Library's popular Senior Spot is hosted at Whole Foods Market. Exercise your mental muscle with board games and card games. Join us for a moderated "discussion circle" comparing five varietally focused wine selections - aimed at beginners and those wanting to relearn what they have forgotten. Maggie and the team will tour you on an adventure through the Cedar Center wine department, which features nearly 900 wines from across the world! Through casual conversation, we will share tricks of the trade and spill some sommelier-like secrets, together exploring the virtues of Cabernet.
