Our Whole TradeTM Guarantee
A Commitment to Ethical Trade, the Environment and Quality Products.
At Whole Foods Market, we believe we have a responsibility toward all entities involved in our business: our customers, shareholders, Team Members, suppliers, the environment and, not least of all, our community. To us, community transcends the boundaries of our cities to the places from which we source our products, many of which are in developing countries.
As a result, we have created the Whole Trade Guarantee, an extension of our values that lets you rest assured that you are buying the best for you, for your community, and your world. Whole Trade Guarantee products must:
- Meet our high Quality Standards
- Provide more money to producers
- Ensure better wages and working conditions for workers
- Utilize sound environmental practices
Plus, with each purchase of those products, one percent of the retail price goes to the Whole Planet Foundation, which is creating real results in the fight against poverty.
Working to End Poverty in the Developing World
For each Whole Trade product sold, one percent of the retail sale will go to the Whole Planet Foundation. The mission of this foundation is to create economic partnerships with the poor in those developing-world communities that supply our stores with products.
Through innovative assistance for entrepreneurship - including direct micro-credit loans and tangible support for other community projects - the Whole Planet Foundation seeks to create prosperity in emerging economies.

Navigating Seafood Sunstainability
In an effort to provide you, our customers with transparency and choices in seafood sustainability, Whole Foods Market is implementing a ranking system for wild-caught seafood. We are partnering with the two most reputable seafood consumer education organizations, Blue Ocean Institute (BOI) and Monterey Bay Aquarium (MBA), which show the sustainability status of all wild-caught species using a color coded ranking system. Customers will see the status of each species/fishery at-a-glance-represented by a green, yellow, or red icon in the case.
By adding rankings for wild-caught seafood, we are now able to label or categorize our seafood and allow our you to make choices via our aquaculture program, MSC certified seafood and now wild-caught.
About Blue Ocean Institute
As an organization on the forefront of the seafood consumer education movement since the late 1990s, Blue Ocean Institute (BOI) (originally Audubon's Living Oceans program) is considered one of the leaders in the field and is highly respected for the rigor of their seafood program.
- Led by Dr. Carl Safina, world renowned author, lecturer, and marine ecologist. Over 100 publications, including features in National Geographic. Award-winning books: Song for the Blue Ocean, Eye of the Albatross, and Voyage of the Turtle. Awards: a Pew Fellowship, Lannan Literary Award, John Burroughs Medal, and a MacArthur Prize, etc.
- Communicates their seafood information through their website, FishPhone (a text messaging-based system for accessing rankings), and a new iphone app, which will be released in early 2010.
- Recently launched Green Chefs, their seafood culinary education curriculum.
· Post their species reports/rankings on their website. No other seafood ranking organization has this level of transparency (except for Monterrey Bay).
Rankings
BOI's color rankings explanation:
· Green: Species is relatively abundant, and fishing methods cause little damage to habitat and other wildlife.
· Yellow: Some problems exist with this species' status or catch methods, or information is insufficient for evaluating.
· Red: For now, species suffers from overfishing; or current fishing methods seriously harm other wildlife or natural habitats.
· Gray: Not yet ratedRankings are based on life history, population, effects on habitat, management of fishery and bycatch.
We hope that you will join us in our continued journey for sustainable seafood!Thurs/Fri 5-8pm & Sat/Sun 12-8pm

Recycle Your Old Cell Phones with Secure the Call!
Please bring your old cell phones to be recycled and keep them from ending up in a landfill. Secure the Call is an all volunteer, non-profit organization that takes your donated phone and redistributes free used cell phones to the community for the purpose of calling 911 in the case of an emergency. The organization carefully wipes out all of your personal information on your cell phone, then reprograms it so that the phone can call 911 only, then tests them to make sure they work before shipping them out. The phones are distributed to partner organizations such as women's shelters, senior citizen centers, sheriff & police departments as well as school systems.
