"Crack Heard Round the World" - Parmigianino Reggiano Wheel Cracking

    1:00 p.m. Free

Join us as Whole Foods Market's cheese mongers in the U.S., Canada and the United Kingdom will demonstrate the traditional method of breaking into 24-month-aged wheels of Parmigiano Reggiano using official tools (five different knives) from Italy's Consorzio del Formaggio Parmigiano Reggiano. The process of carving into and portioning each 85-pound wheel requires an expert hand and is usually done in about half an hour.  In 2008, Guinness World Records confirmed that Whole Foods Market, in its first-ever attempt, set a record for "Most Parmigiano Reggiano Wheels Cracked Simultaneously," with nearly 300 wheels opened at 176 stores. Whole Foods Market hopes to break that record with this year's event. The ceremony will mark the grand finale to a month-long spotlight of Parmigiano Reggiano, which will honor the tradition behind the "king of cheese" and highlight its versatility.  In addition to joining us in-store, we also invite you to participate in an online recipe contest for a chance to win a $500 shopping spree, authentic cheese knife sets and gift baskets.  For one week, from February 3 through 10, you can submit an original recipes online on Whole Foods Market's Behind the Rind Web page (http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/products/behindtherind/) to share new and innovative ways to enjoy real, aged Parmigiano every day. More details available at: www.wholefoodsmarket.com.

5% Community Support day benefiting Sonoma County Volunteer Center

    8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Our Community Support days are one of the meaningful ways we give back to our community and get the word out about organizations in our area. Come show your support by shopping on this day and 5% of the day's net sales will go to the Sonoma County Volunteer Center, which has served as the hub of volunteerism in the community since 1972. Each year, it connects thousands of people wishing to volunteer with hundreds of organizations needing help. The Volunteer Center also offers many direct programs that include tutoring school children in reading and math, fostering active lifestyles in our neighborhoods, driving homebound residents to critical appointments, providing critical information on health and social services via our 2-1-1 helpline, and working with the court system to provide community service as a sentencing alternative. We also offer management training to non-profit organizations, and assist hundreds of agencies each year with capacity-building and fund raising support.

Does this mean you can only eat items from our produce dept?  Absolutely not!  Find out how this diet and set of beliefs translates into some truly amazing food as you taste a delicious array from over 6 different vendors.  You might even take home a gift basket full of products being sampled!

Heating food above 116 degrees F is believed to destroy enzymes in food that can assist in the digestion and absorption of food, as well as diminish the nutritional value and "life force" of food. Does this mean you can only eat items from our produce dept?  Absolutely not!  Find out how this diet and set of beliefs translates into some truly amazing food as you taste a delicious array from over 6 different vendors.  You might even take home a gift basket full of products being sampled!
