Halloween is just three weeks away and with supermarket store shelves stocked with sugary delights, this fact is hard to ignore. It’s also hard to ignore the ingredient lists of candy classics, chock full of high fructose corn syrup, artificial flavors, artificial preservatives and more.

Alter Eco Dark Chocolate Quinoa BarI love that Whole Foods Market offers other options for trick-or-treaters and Halloween revelers, or straight-up chocolate lovers, like the delicious Alter Eco Organic Dark Chocolate Quinoa Bar.  This six-ingredient wonder (Cacao beans, raw cane sugar, cocoa butter, quinoa-rice crisps (quinoa, rice and sugar), vanilla beans) offers an update to a childhood favorite.  It’s got a satisfying crispy crunch and is Fair Trade certified and organic to boot.

From the Royal Quinoa harvested in the Bolivian Andes to the Amazon-grown and Swiss-made dark chocolate to the unrefined Mascobado cane sugar from the Philippines, every ingredient in this simply delicious chocolate bar is chosen with care and concern for the environment and the communities producing these products.  Alter Eco is committed to the small farmers and their families who grow their products, and as such have developed an extensive auditing process for all of their growers to ensure fair wages, good working conditions and hours, and opportunities for economic growth and development. (You can read more about the Alter Eco story in this blog post from last May.)

So, at this point, I know you absolutely can’t wait to get your hands on this amazing chocolate bar and guess what, you’re just in luck!  If quinoa in a chocolate bar sounds a little “nutty”, tell us what other crazy thing you’d add to a chocolate bar. Share your ideas in the comments below by Friday, October 19th.  We’ll pick a winner at random to receive a case of Alter Eco Organic Dark Chocolate Quinoa Bars (that’s a total of 48 bars!).

At a recent Indian dinner party, I had some rice pudding for dessert (a simple dish made with rice, milk, sugar and optional cardamom -served cold). I think shavings of chocolate on top of the snow white rice pudding will be quite a combination.

I remember when I was younger and going to the movies my favorite thing to do would be to add Raisinettes to my nachos. My favorite part of it was the chocolate and cheese part. So that is the crazy thng I would add to a chocolate bar. Of course I haven't tried this combo in at least 15 years, but doing this "crazy" thing with my friends is a good childhood memory that I have.

Ashley says …

Carmel and banana. Sounds yummy!

I am a huge fan of chocolate but try to hold myself back since I know its not always a great choice. One thing I have always thought would be neat in chocolate would be a little bit of citrus peel. Maybe lemon, orange, or even lime. I am not sure if this has ever been tried or done before but if I ever say it at the store I would be sure to try it out!

I would have told you adding bacon to a chocolate bar would be crazy but that's been done before. So Quinoa and Chocolate just seems as natural as peanut butter and chocolate. I just had some sea asparagus ice cream yesterday which surprisingly had a creamy, light texture. peanuts and meat have been added to chocolate. Why not fish? Get my awesome Omega-3 with that. LOL. Oh, once i had chocolate tofu so, you know, that would be crazy too. I've never tried this, but maybe I'll do this tonight, you could melt chocolate and mix it with poi. I mean poi and pineapples taste good...why not chocolate.

M Bird says …

Hmmm, sign me up!! What about porcini, or shiitake mushrooms; rose or violet petals; dried apricots; dried persimmon; pumpkin seeds?

I love salty and sweet things with chocolate. I'd add caramel and bacon. Obviously not the most healthy combination imaginable, but it's so, so good. I once made brownies topped with crispy bacon pieces and caramel drizzle and they were guiltily delicious. That said, I also love berries with chocolate. Especially raspberries. Yum!

Rashi Sanghvi says …

I would add try and add some ground kale to make hide some healthy green in my chocolate bar.

Cathy says …
