U.S. Peppers Get the Okay

Break out the pico de gallo and chips! The FDA is advising consumers that raw jalapeño and Serrano peppers grown in the United States ARE NOT connected with the current Salmonella St. Paul outbreak and consumers can eat them without concern of contamination. So we are back in business offering ONLY U.S. grown jalapeño and Serrano peppers. In our prepared foods, we are using U.S. raw jalapeño and Serrano peppers or canned, pickled or cooked varieties, which have been okay all along – only raw peppers were of concern.

Full Circle Compost and Hungry Mother Organics

On June 25th, we welcomed a new store in Reno, Nevada. There are many green aspects of our new store from skylights to new LED lights in frozen cases. One of the most exciting is a new partnership with Full Circle Compost and Hungry Mother Organics. At Whole Foods Market our sustainability goals include moving to zero waste by keeping organic waste out of landfills. Since the city of Reno doesn’t compost, Full Circle is going to take our food waste and make it into compost for us. Full Circle recycles organic waste into high quality soil amendments and custom soil mixes for the Reno area.

The best part of my job as administrator of our Local Producer Loan Program isn’t giving out loans to our small producers – it’s watching loan recipients use those loans to grow their businesses. In the year and a half since we launched the program, Whole Foods Market has provided loans to 29 small producers of products ranging from grassfed beef and honey to wine sorbet and body care products.

Fresh Summer Corn

Fresh corn – especially corn eaten right off the cob – just screams “summer” for me. On this podcast, I talked with produce expert James Parker to find out about the different varieties of corn, how to pick the best and how to cook those yummy ears. Of course, how you eat your corn on the cob is a personal choice – do you eat horizontally across the cob or bite around the cob in a circular pattern? Listen in and share your corn thoughts.

Fancy Food Scoop

I’m recently back from a trip to New York City where I attended this summer's Fancy Food Show. For the past 50 years, the National Association for the Specialty Food Trade has sponsored these events to show off what’s hot and new in the specialty food marketplace.

I love working with family-owned businesses, especially those that truly believe in what they do. Maine Root Soda Company, based right here in Austin, TX, is one of those companies.

Natural Salon Part I: Ingredients to Look For

Chews Wise with John Mackey

In a wide ranging interview posted to his blog Chews Wise, Samuel Fromartz, author of Organic, Inc: Natural Foods and How They Grew, talked to Whole Foods Market CEO John Mackey about "the Wild Oats deal, rising food prices, the company's soon-to-be-launched meat ratings system, and the prospects for sustainable seafood." This is a great read for anyone interested in the natural foods industry and Whole Foods Market in particular.
