Cooking with Blackberries

Blackberry-Lavender Shrub Recipe

We joke that our kids are fruitatarians, but in reality they should be described as berry-tarians. Any time we pick up a package of fresh berries, it’s a wonder there are any left by the time we get back home.

Blackberries are especially a favorite; as the large juicy berries are filled with sweet-sour flavor that make them a delight to eat. Plus, they’re a good source of both vitamin C and fiber, which means I don’t feel too bad about my kids gobbling them up before I can!

Selecting & Using Blackberries

  • Blackberries should be shiny in appearance and the drupelets should be plump and smooth.
  • Check the bottom of the package for any leakage from berries that have been squished in packing.
  • Store blackberries unwashed in the refrigerator, in a single layer if possible to prevent crushing.
  • To wash, gently swirl in colander set in a bowl of clean water.

Blackberries don’t ripen after picking, so they’re best enjoyed as soon as possible. If you aren’t planning to use them soon after purchase, you can freeze them. To avoid freezing the berries in one clump, simply line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment and arrange washed and dried blackberries on top. Set the baking sheet in the freezer for a few hours; once frozen they can be placed in freezer-safe bags.

While blackberries are perfectly delicious as they are, here are some great ways to enjoy them:

  • Toss with sugar and mint for an herbal fruit salad.
  • Crush and add to your favorite sparkling water.
  • Blend with honey and butter for a fantastic breakfast spread.
  • Make your own quick berry preserves for your morning toast.
  • Swap in blackberries in your favorite blueberry muffin recipe.
  • Create a smoothie bowl with a mix of blackberries, almonds and yogurt.
  • Use a pile of fresh blackberries to garnish a simple cake.
  • Add to a wild rice salad and serve with chicken.
