Earth Month Tips for Food Choices

EarthlingsCaring about our communities and the environment isn’t just our rallying cry during Earth Month, it’s one of our core values. So we’re continually working to decrease our impact on the planet. Over the years, our team members and customers have shared some great green-living tips, which have inspired changes in our stores, homes, offices and communities.

We’ve divided these ideas into four posts – tips for food choices, transportation, energy and the home – that we’ll be publishing throughout the month. Plus, visit www.earthlingmonth.com for more Earth Month inspiration, stories, and events.

While you’re there we hope you’ll show us what makes you an earthling — #wfmearthling — and you could win a $150 Whole Foods Market gift card.

We Are What We Eat

From what we choose to buy to how much of it and who it’s made by, our choices at the grocery store count. We’ve collected nine of our favorite Earth Month tips for food choices. Take a look, get inspired, and share your ideas too.

  1. Love your whole foods. The actual food, that is. The more whole your food is, the fewer processing resources it requires to get it to your plate.
  2. Shop bulk. Save packaging on groceries such as grains, beans, cereals, pasta and snacks by buying them from bulk bins. Plus, being able to buy just the amount you need means no waste!
  3. Bring a bag. Remember your reusable bags to avoid using paper bags and get a little discount at our checkout. Our small-size reusable bags are perfect for gifts…or your lunch!
  4. Non-GMO ProjectSay no to GMOs. Look for one of two labels that are your best bet for avoiding genetically modified ingredients: Non-GMO Project Verified and/or USDA Organic. (Tip: look at the non-GMO shopping lists found on each of our store’s webpages.)
  5. Make it organic. Organic agriculture limits input of toxic and persistent chemicals in the air, soil and water…and thus in farm workers and your own family. (As the first nationally certified organic grocer in the US, we offer you the biggest and best choice we possibly can.)
  6. Don’t stop with a milk mustache. Organics go beyond milk, fruits and vegetables. All food—cereal, bread, eggs, grains, meats, beans, etc—start with something growing in the ground that could be grown organic.
  7. Shop thoughtfully. Choose products from companies and businesses that do things to support the health of the planet.
  8. Say cheese. Some of our favorite cheese producer partners take extra steps for the Earth. Ask a cheesemonger for a story…and a sample.
  9. CompostGet down and dirty. Compost your food waste to reduce trash that goes to a landfill. It’s easier than you think and if you garden, add compost for nutrient-rich soil.

Applause All Around!

Earth Month is about recognizing achievements too. Last month we proudly stood up for your right to transparency by announcing that all products in our US and Canadian stores containing genetically modified organisms (GMOs) must be clearly labeled within five years.

Your turn! Growing your own veggies? Keeping bees in your backyard? What food-related choices are you making in the name of the planet? Share and celebrate in the comments below.

As an avid WF shopper I know that many customers shop here especially because of WF's awareness of special dietary needs. People who are vegetarian, vegan, gluten free, lactose intolerant, etc. appreciate the shopping choices that exist. It would be incredibly helpful if prepared foods behind the deli counter and at food stations were keyed to these dietary needs. It is so inefficient tying up other customers while you read the little ingredient cards to make sure that it suits your diet! A simple V/VG/GF/ etc at the top of the card would help us al in so many ways!!
