The Love of Beer: Do Something Reel™ Film Festival

The Do Something Reel™ Film Festival continues this month with The Love of Beer, a film that raises a glass to women who are dedicating their lives to craft beer – and in turn fighting stereotypes and changing the way the world views women's roles.

In April we proudly launched the Do Something Reel Film Festival opens in a new tab, an online collection of provocative, character-driven films that focus on food, environmental issues and everyday people with a vision of making a world of difference. Simply put, it’s a celebration of people who understand that small steps can create big change. The Do Something Reel Film Festival continues this month with The Love of Beer opens in a new tab, a film that raises a glass to women who are dedicating their lives to craft beer – and in turn defying stereotypes and changing the way the world views women's roles. When I say, “brewer”, what images do you conjure up? A young hipster with a handlebar moustache? Perhaps a grandfatherly type in a sensible button-down shirt? Whoever you imagine, it’s likely not a petite woman with red pigtails. With Tonya Cornett’s award-winning beers opens in a new tab however, things are starting to change.

It might be surprising to learn that with the rise of women like Tonya on the scene, brewing is returning to its roots. Traditionally, brewing was a household chore that fell upon the women. It wasn't until the industrial revolution that brewing shifted from a woman's small enterprise to the domain of male factory workers. Beer and brewing gained a "men's club" stereotype. Further enforced by marketing and popular media, the industry has remained a heavily male-dominated field. Fortunately, a gender-blind craft beer revolution is underway; from farm to consumption, women are brewing and pouring their way to become some of the most influential people in the field.

Based in the Pacific Northwest, The Love of Beer follows these female pioneers as they struggle to end stereotypes, handle their rising fame and raise a family in a 21-and-over lifestyle. While they acknowledge that their struggles are opening doors for women everywhere, they’re not doing it for feminism or equality – they’re doing it for the love of beer. Take a taste of this crisp, earthy, full-bodied film here.
