Tom McCarthy says ...
While I welcome John Mackey's retraction of the unduly provocative language contained in his recent commentary on ObamaCare, it is apparent from his retraction that Mackey still brings an ideological bias that blinds him from reality. Fact #1: ObamaCare does not mandate the vast majority of employers to change the health care insurance they provide to their employees. In fact, it is estimated that over 80% of employers will need to make no change in the extent of coverage they provide. Fact #2: The one major change the remaining -20% of employers will need to make (if they wish to avoid a tax penalty) is that they will have to provide health insurance that meets a minimal standard of sufficiency. This provision was included in the law to prevent employers from misleading employees into believing that the company was providing adequate insurance when, in fact, the company-provided insurance was so inadequate that it failed to cover (or failed to provide a sufficient benefit level to cover) many of the most common health problems. So the free market "creativity" and "innovation" Mackey is defending is the ability of employers to deceive their employees to accept woefully inadequate health insurance, a practice in some industries that perpetuates personal bankruptcy and tragedy. As the CEO of a major company, this kind of conscious capitalism may seem perfectly fine to Mackey, but it is exploitive of employees who have neither the knowledge nor the expertise in health insurance to recognize how their employer is taking advantage of them.

I shop and spend as much a 33% more for a healthier lifestyle and u refuse to make sure your own employees can make a living wage but can also afford basic healthcare?? So being able to have access to decent affirdable healthcare is a free market thing?? That hasnt been the case and since u are a millionair I guess u really dont care. Dont forget how you got were u are.. off the backs of those working their ass off for u. Shame.. whole foods just lost my business and I will continue to give my business to the natural food store down the street.

Whole Foods is a little bit out of my way, but now I feel like it's practically my moral duty to shop there. Right ON, John Mackey.

Mr. Mackey - While I realize there was a need to soothe customers, I want to thank you for telling it like it is the first time around.

People should put things in the proper context before reacting to one's words. Webster defines fascism as, "1. a political philosophy, movement, or regime that exalts nation and often race above individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation and forcible suppression of opposition. 2. a tendency toward or actual exercise of strong autocratic or dictatorial control. The context within which you used the term demonstrates the accuracy of your statement. I understand your need to eliminate those things that negatively effect the bottom line. Just understand that a lot of folks agree with you, including me.

You should never retract or apologize for stating the truth as we know it from history. So many people forget that right is right and wrong is wrong. You stated the obvious - those of us who care about the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights are trying to save our country from the twisted mindset of socialism, whether from the lesson of the Bolsheviks or Hitler's attack on the world.

Mr Mackey, I value your commentary as the CEO of a successful business. It's unfortunate members of certain groups promote terror to further their ideologies. As a customer who shops at both WF and Sprouts, I and others who support the 1st Ammendment will switch to your store exclusively to make up any lost volume. Thank you for your strong leadership as a civic leader and business executive.

Mr. Mackey, I support your comments concerning the Obama administration and their takeover of the best healthcare system in the world. You are a capitalist, as am I, and only a crazy person would approach business in any other way. I only wish you had a Whole Foods location in Fort Worth - I would be a regular customer. As it is, I will seek out Whole Foods Markets when I travel around the country. I wish you well and encourage you to continue your outspoken support for the free-market, capitalist system. Do not let progressive voices silence you!

I LOVE Whole Foods! It appears many of Mackey's critics from his recent interview are intolerant people. I and my family shop WF for high quality foods and NOT healthcare. It's a shame many of my fellow patrons would make an emotional decision and bypass your store which exceeds good healthy eating standards. This boycott will cost the store many EBT cards.

I am a Trader Joes fan and only occasionally have I shopped Whole Foods partly do to location. (Pasadena is about 35 mi.) and partly because of the rude looks I get when I drive into your parking lot in my Hummer with my American flag and NRA sticker. I am a stay at home mother of 7 who volunteers in a local hospital. My husband works very hard at our small family business. We are an active family who eats healthy and mostly organic and by doing so I pray my family won't become dependent on the health care system as it seems so many plan on doing. I will now drive the extra 35 mi. more often to support your store, knowing that you, like myself and my husband, have such a clear understanding of what our freedoms are about. I hope you hang in there and don't compromise your convictions for the sake of a few who seem a bit confused. Thank-you!

go figure, others have expressed my exact same stance far better then I ever would. I cant say I wll boycott since I don't buy much a whole food anyways ( its way too expansive as it is) but I wll say that you are no diffrent from any other ceo, out of touch with what really happens in peoples life. but then I'm wasting my breath because in the you and every other corporate stooge simply don't care beyond what you can make as profit.

I want to know in which isle I find facism because I want to avoid it, and all others, in every other store, in the future. And I want to alert others. Is it pervasive? Reprehensible. Shame. Hypocritical. Need I go on, James? apologies notwithstanding.

John, please do not feel an apology is required when you speak the truth. It amazes me that so many individuals believe that health care should be controlled by a government that cannot successfully run the post office. They can't ship packages in a cost effective manner and yet they now control our health care. I appreciate your comments and will continue to support Whole Foods with my $15,000 per year grocery bill. THANKS!!!

Whether you call it socialism or fascism it's still wide scale interference by government. Government has been significantly involved in health care since 1965 (Medicare). The results of government meddling: high costs and a nearly bankrupt medical system and country. Those who suggest that capitalism has failed in the medical care arena are hoping for miracles. Our non-government system is not perfect, but it already covered 85% of the folks. So, Mr. Obama and his merry band of idiots take a system that’s not working for 15% and ruins it for 100%. He was an empty suit when he beat Hillary and McCain and he’ll leave office an empty suit in 4 years. He’s good at two things – speaking and blaming others.

I shocked by your attitude. While Free Market Capitalism works well in selling cars or carrots, it has little value in covering every American with health insurance at low cost. The Heritage Foundation idea was correct in REQUIRING everyone who can afford it to purchase basic health insurance so those without means can also be covered. I too will now find another store for my "health " needs.

I think people need to get over themselves and certain words. They need to listen to what is being said in context and drop the "drama". It is a word from history and instead of getting all upset they should "think" if there is truly a comparison. I imagine the people getting upset about this are supporters of Obama and just react rather than think. I wish there was a store near me as I would shop there. To all those who say they will stop shopping at Whole Foods, where are you going to shop to find the same things?
