My Favorite New Recipes: Spooky, Sweet and Savory Halloween Dishes and Desserts

As a classically trained chef with a political science degree, Food Editor Molly Siegler puts her food fascination to work coordinating the creation of recipes and other food-focused content for Whole Foods Market. Halloween equals a fun excuse to make weird food. Luckily, these party-ready recipes are weird with a nutritious twist! For any Halloween planning, it’s essential to think about savory in addition to sweet foods. Candy is pretty much a guarantee, so getting a little “real” food in on the action is very important.

Here are my favorites for the savory and sweet sides of the party:

Pumpkin Hand Pies

Hand pies are a blast to make and less fussy than a full-blown pie, and I just love that these each have their own special jack-o’-lantern face. If you are feeling crunched for time, but still want the hand pie experience, just roll out the dough a little more and cut it into rectangles (classic toaster-pastry-style), skipping the more intricate details of the recipe—they’ll still be delicious and festive. Being able to make dinner from ingredients that are already in your fridge is a hugely satisfying feat, but doing that while also making a creepy Halloween-ready meal is even cooler. English muffins are great for breakfast and lifesaver for dinner. Use them as the base for mini pizzas that are stuffed with veggies (feel free to add pepperoni or shredded chicken, too!) and then draped with string cheese for a mummy effect.

Spider Web Sugar Cookies

On to homemade sweet treats! Having a couple easy decorating tricks up your sleeve is an excellent way to get a Halloween vibe going. You can use the spider web icing technique on any of your favorite non-chunky cookies (buy pre-made to make things easier!), but I love the nuttiness of the whole wheat flour in this recipe with the chocolaty spider webs.

Halloween Mummy Brownie Bites

Another fun trick involves using melted white chocolate to wrap a tiny brownie up like a mummy — and the messier they are, the better. Grab a couple dried blueberries or currant for eyes and you’re set with some scary easy brownie bites.
