Put on your Sundae Best! Bloggers Share Their Best Ice Cream Tips to Celebrate National Ice Cream Day
By Ellen Miller, July 8, 2016 | More posts by Ellen Miller
National Ice Cream Day is coming up on Sunday, July 17. To mark the occasion, we asked some of our favorite food bloggers (including our own Food Editor, Molly Siegler!) to share some of their best pics, advice, and crazy delicious recipes. Don’t eat dairy? Don’t worry! We’ve got tasty ways for you to celebrate, too.

Most delicious ice cream you’ve ever tasted: “Lucuma-flavored ice cream in Peru, made from the tropical fruit. Sometime in the not so distant future, I'll be sharing my (vegan) lucuma ice cream recipe, which is made with cacao butter, pure maple syrup, and full-fat coconut milk.”
Best pro tip: “Store homemade ice cream with a layer of plastic wrap pressed into the top of the ice cream. Sayonara, pesky ice crystals!”

Best vegan alternative: “We're in love with banana “nice cream.” Just freeze some bananas and blend them in a food processor. There are so many ingredients you can add like other frozen fruits, cocoa powder or nut butters, and then add your favorite toppings (we love chopped nuts and maple syrup), and it's ready to eat!
How to get the perfect pic: “Place your bowl on a wood table or on a white surface near a window to get some beautiful natural daylight, and take the photo from above. If you do that, you'll get an amazing shot!”
DIY Ice Cream Sandwiches

Favorite flavor: "We have an amazing line of gelatos that is under our Whole Foods Market brand. Their texture is so smooth and creamy. The Limoncello Italian Gelato has a swirl of tart lemon curd, which is gorgeous and delicious."
Best way to celebrate: "I am planning to have an ice cream sandwich party! I’ll pick up lots of different ice creams, sorbets flavors and cookie options. (The texture of store-bought cookies often works better for sandwiches.) I’m going to have have guests bring fun things to dip or roll the sandwiches in (warm jam, toasted coconut flakes…) Yum!"

Favorite off-beat flavor: Balsamic vinegar flavored ice cream was one that I loved but was definitely skeptical of before trying! I tried this one in Italy.”
Secret for the perfect scoop: “Ice cream melts on the outside of the container first, so for easier scooping, scoop from the outside in.”

Favorite double scoop combo: “You can't beat a really good vanilla ice cream followed by chocolate ice cream, especially if the chocolate ice cream has chunks of brownie in it.”
Best pro tip: “Almost all of my favorite ice cream recipes (including the Easy No Churn Strawberry Ice Cream pictured here) use condensed milk, which means no churning!”

Favorite off-the-wall topping: “I love making pretzel crunch, a sweet, salty and crunchy topping that adds a new dimension to any scoop.”
Best pro tip: “One of the easiest things you can do to make a perfect scoop is to use the best quality and freshest ingredients! Use high-fat rich milk and cream and use only ingredients that you would to eat.”
